If you look through my Google, TripAdvisor, or OpenTable reviews, you’ll notice I rarely leave negative feedback. In fact, I waited a full week before writing this review because I wanted to cool down and make sure I was being fair.
Unfortunately, my experience at East Side Mario’s was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had, and it had very little to do with the food.
The hostess was incredibly rude, dismissive, disorganized, and unprofessional from the moment we walked in. Her body language, tone, and attitude toward guests were shocking. We watched her tell the couple ahead of us that there would be a 30+ minute wait despite numerous empty tables throughout the restaurant.
When it was my turn, I was told there would be a 35+ minute wait because the restaurant was supposedly at full capacity. That simply wasn’t true. While standing there, I checked OpenTable and found reservation slots available every 15 minutes for the rest of the evening. When I politely pointed this out, she refused to listen and spoke to me as though I was the problem.
I should have left at that point. Instead, I made a reservation through the app and was seated almost immediately, proving availability existed all along.
What bothered me most wasn’t the wait—it was the treatment. I also watched her interact with several other guests behind me, and the same rude, dismissive attitude continued.
The bright spot was our server, who was friendly, attentive, and excellent throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food was only average. The salad contained brown lettuce, and the soup arrived cold and lumpy.
I dine out frequently and generally try to give businesses the benefit of the doubt, but this experience left such a poor impression that I’m not sure I’ll return. One employee can have a huge impact on a guest’s experience, and in this case, the front-of-house service overshadowed everything else.
Unless significant changes are made to the guest experience at the front door, I cannot recommend this location.
