2 problems with my visit. 1) kiosk programming which is a head office issue and 2) outrageously bad customer service
I'll start by saying I am usually quite happy ordering on a kiosk. But they have to work. The kiosks here are apparently smart enough to realize that an item is not available, but are not programmed to tell you what that might be. So I attempted to order food for my family. A value box, a burrito and 2 drinks. **Error ask staff for help**
Well, there's no staff available to help, so I try altering my order, maybe something is sold out.. I try another 3 times while waiting for one of the cooks to eventually wander out with someone else's order.
"Hi the kiosk keeps giving me an error, are you sold out of anything?" Guy says no. Ok can I show you and you tell me where it's going wrong?
Ok fine. I punch in my order and we finally get to the last item. A dr Pepper. Apparently that's the issue. They don't carry that. Um ok, then why isn't the kiosk properly programmed? Can you let your manager know that this needs fixing? "No. My manager can't fix that". And he's already heading back to the kitchen.
Okay... then the owner? Someone has to have the ability to update the kiosks.. Even contacting head office or wherever if it needs to be updated remotely. In the meantime maybe just put up a sign? He says no they're not going to put up a sign. Okay... so just leave it as is forever?
The employee then tells me "well you can see what drinks we sell, we obviously don't have dr pepper." Are you kidding me? If I hadn't flagged him down, I wouldn't even know that was the issue with my order. It's not for me to play sherlock to figure out what is or isn't available.
The kiosk was annoying. The real problem here is that the employee could see absolutely nothing wrong with the situation and offered no solution. I know there are no counter staff but that means the kitchen crew needs to at least be familiar with the concept of customer service. I don't expect them to necessarily solve this kind of problem, but they should be able to see that it is indeed an issue (one that will come up again and again) and escalate it to someone to correct it.
I would have happily continued with my order/day if the employee had the sense to acknowledge that yes, there is an issue and I'll pass on the concern. Maybe it's a new system with kinks to be ironed out.. maybe it's already been escalated and they're waiting on a fix.. I don't know. But he was rude and doubled down on it somehow being my problem for not guessing the solution.
I know walking out made 0 difference to that employee's life or even the location's bottom line, but it's the principle. And i will not be shy about sharing this experience with others. A restaurant that doesn't give a damn about basic customer service doesn't deserve my money.
