Clarification:
This 1 star review is for the ups store at a corporate level, and more specifically, their rentable mailboxes. This review does not reflect my personal interactions with staff at this specific location, which I have maintained for 23 years. /clarification.
Utter. Corporate. Greed.
History:
I've had this pmb (private mail box) with ups for 23 years. When I originally opened this box, the annual cost was reasonably priced, and the security features and location were convenient. Meaning: I found it a good value; and in turn, ups made a comfortable profit off my choice. I.E. a fair business transaction for both parties.
Early on, the cost of the box went up every other year or so. This was a little annoying, but probably within the cost of inflation, so I was ok with it. However, the price of my mail box has gone up egregiously every single year for the last 10 years. As a consequence, I began to question the value moving forward.
The greed:
Then in 2025, they informed us that packages, each package, not picked up within three days would incure a fee of $5... a day! However, this fee was consequently lowered to $1 a day. I'm sure $5--->$1 was entirely because of the MASSIVE backlash they received from customer complaints. But don't worry, we all know corporate will get that daily fee back to $5 as soon as they can... and it won't stop there.
More greed:
I have now been informed about yet *another* fee corporate has just added (less than one year after the announcement of the package storage fee). Going forward, box renters need to "subscribe" to a monthly package reception fee, on top of their monthly charge. This brand new, out of the blue, fee is based on the number of packages you ESTIMATE you expect to receive per month: ~$5, $15, $20 each month depending on a fixed monthly package limit, respectively. This is bananas, how in the world do I know how many packages I'm going to receive monthly throughout the year?! Oh wait, this subscription is designed so you're forced to pick the highest tier so as not to incur ADDITIONAL fees if you go over your monthly allotment of allowed packages received. And this fee isn't optional, you cannot opt out. I was told this: "the monthly prices for the boxes aren't increasing. We're just adding a mandatory fee to the monthly charge." They think we're stupid... that's a monthly price increase: $30 for the box + minimum $5 for your package reception fee = $35 a month. $35 is not $30. That's a monthly price increase. Yes, I can maths.
This is absolutely insane corporate greed. What am I, as the customer, getting out of these endless additional fees? Discounts on ups products and services? HAHAHA! No. 24/7 package pickup access? No. Is ups fiscally in the red? No. Are they on the verge of chapter 11? No. They are raising their prices (three price increases in ONE YEAR!) simply because they CAN, not because they need to.
Ups thinks they have a captive audience with these pmb's, so they are going for the jugular knowing many customers, especially if you're small businesses owner, really have few other options. They are banking (pun intended) on consumers shrugging and blindly paying these unnecessary, ridiculous fees.
My advice:
Avoid ups pmb's at all cost (literally) unless you're a massive masochist or a fan of subscription fees and micro transactions *on top* of your monthly payments.
tl;dr:
The greed of the corporate class has pushed us too far, and we as consumers are done with this. Box canceled.
