YUVRAJ SANDHU

I travel between North Carolina and Virginia frequently, and I always stop at the Subway inside the Love’s Travel Stop on I-85 Exit 15 in Virginia. I’ve eaten here many times, and this is the first time I’ve had such a disappointing experience.
Today, my wife and I stopped for lunch. When we walked up to the counter, an employee told us to wait about 10 minutes before disappearing into the back. After waiting 10–15 minutes, a woman who had been sitting in the office came out and asked what I wanted.
I ordered the Spicy Nacho sub. She looked confused and said they didn’t have a sub by that name. I pointed to the menu board directly behind her where it was clearly listed. She then said she couldn’t make it because they were out of the creamy cheddar cheese sauce. I told her that was fine and that I would simply choose a different sauce. She refused, saying they could only make the sandwich exactly as it appeared on the menu and couldn’t substitute the sauce.
I’ve eaten at many Subway locations, and customers have always been able to customize their sandwiches. Since I was paying for it, I didn’t understand why I couldn’t choose a different sauce. Another employee, who appeared to be the manager, came over and confirmed that I could substitute the sauce or choose any sauce I wanted. Only then did she begin making the sandwich.
As she was preparing it, she placed the chicken on the bread. While she was unwrapping the cheese, a fly landed directly on the chicken and remained there for several seconds. I immediately pointed it out, and when she moved her arm, the fly flew away. At that point, I told her I no longer wanted the sandwich because I wasn’t comfortable eating food that a fly had just been sitting on.
What made the situation even worse was that there were about 4–5 other customers waiting behind me. After they witnessed what happened with the fly, they also walked away without ordering anything. That alone should tell management how unacceptable the situation was.
The overall experience was very disappointing. The customer service and attitude were poor, the sandwich preparation area looked dirty, and many of the vegetable containers were empty.
I’ve stopped at this Love’s location many times over the years and have always had a good experience, which makes this visit even more disappointing. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was bad enough that I felt it was important to share. I hope management addresses the cleanliness issues, improves food safety practices, and provides better customer service training so other customers don’t have the same experience
