I stopped by the Subway on Bonham Street by the Loop expecting the usual experience: walk in, order a sandwich, walk out, and question why I paid extra for avocado.
Instead, this place felt like the sandwich shop equivalent of a NASCAR pit stop.
There was activity everywhere. People coming in, people going out, bread flying, vegetables being aggressively negotiated over, and somebody in line looking like they had been waiting long enough to qualify for employee benefits.
I stepped up and ordered my sandwich. The employee asked what I wanted on it with the calmness of a person who has clearly witnessed things.
“Lettuce?”
“Yes.”
“Tomato?”
“Yes.”
“Onion?”
I hesitated.
That was my mistake.
Suddenly I felt like I was making a life-altering decision. Somewhere behind me, the line grew. I could feel their eyes. I finally said, “Yeah, onion.”
Crisis averted.
The sandwich came together, wrapped up tighter than a government secret, and somehow survived the journey to the table.
Was it the greatest sandwich I’ve ever eaten? No.
Was it exactly what I expected from Subway? Absolutely.
But that’s the charm of the Bonham Street location. You don’t just get a sandwich—you get an experience. It’s part lunch, part traffic report, and part live-action episode of Everybody Needs To Chill Out.
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars.
Good sandwich, interesting atmosphere, and enough mayhem to make the meal memorable. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, keep driving.
If you’re hungry and want to watch the world go sideways while somebody makes you a turkey sub, pull in.
