I have been coming to this Subway on and off for about a year, but after this experience, I will not be returning.
From the moment I walked in, the employee who assisted me came across as aggressive. Before even taking my order, she immediately started listing everything they were out of in a demanding tone instead of greeting me or providing friendly customer service. Even with everything she listed, they still had everything I ended up ordering.
I also noticed she was not wearing a hairnet. Her braids looked sloppy at the roots, and her handwritten name tag looked rushed and unprofessional. Overall, the appearance did not reflect the level of professionalism I expect from someone preparing food.
The biggest issue happened while she was making my sandwich. She started putting a heavy amount of lettuce on it without asking how I wanted it. I politely asked for a little bit of lettuce. She kept adding more, so I repeated my request and again asked for just a little bit.
At that point, she suddenly looked up at me and locked eyes with me in a way that, from my perspective, looked like she was ready to jump over the counter and kill me. That is honestly how intense and hostile her expression appeared. Instead of simply listening to my request, she argued over my wording and said, "It's light on the lettuce." My request was for a little bit of lettuce. Instead of acknowledging that, she seemed determined to correct my wording. It came across as a power struggle over something that should have been a simple customer request.
After wrapping my sandwich, I asked for it to be cut a certain way. Instead of cutting it and leaving it wrapped together as I have consistently received at Subway, she wrapped each half separately. I have never had a Subway prepare my sandwich that way before.
My biggest concern is that customers should not have to deal with employees who come across as aggressive and combative over simple, polite requests. Customer service is about listening, communicating respectfully, and making customers feel welcome—not turning a simple request into a confrontation.
I chose not to argue because I was not going to waste my energy on an unnecessary confrontation. I simply took my food and left. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. I hope management considers the importance of hiring employees who can provide professional, respectful customer service and handle routine customer requests without creating unnecessary conflict.
