I have used this particular UPS Store at Temple about half a dozen times over the last few years. Each time was an unhappy experience--because of the grumpy unhelpful clerks--and the most recent, Thursday, May 19th, left me disturbed, angry for the rest of the day. I like to think of myself as a tolerant customer, patient in lines, forgiving, and sympathetic to overworked and low-paid clerks. I can imagine that a clerk who has to deal with privileged students might develop some degree of coldness as a survival strategy. Yet what I experienced on Thurs May 19th was so rude, it conjured waves of anger in me I rarely feel towards others. When asking questions about the proper forms to fill out--and I was taking on the cheery, apologetic demeanor of a 'hapless customer'--the clerk, a young woman, was mumbly, almost incoherent, I couldn't understand what she was saying, and in my confusion about which form to fill out I--clearly not a student, a professor--was made to feel as if it were *my* fault for not understanding her, my problem for not understanding the procedures. My anger escalated, and I almost yelled; it was clear I was an unhappy camper. There was no attempt to deescalate this interaction, and not even a (fake) thank-you from the clerk. The impatience, uncaring attitude by clerks at this location has been on-going, and this visit was more than typical, it was outrageous. I've hesitated to make this complaint so public, fearing some personally damaged clerk is going to get fired, but as I leave Temple, I can't help but think this clerk's demeanor just brings more negativity to the campus. My receipt says "CSH: D'Aimee". The clerk who was so unable with me should get some professional help and this location must institute some customer service training.
