  I purchased a Dorman DYI fob remote that had an OBD II device to program a replacement key fob for a 2016 Ford Mustang. The Dorman instruction sheet, along with Dorman tech support, indicated that the replacement backup key that comes with the new fob needs to be laser cut BEFORE the new fob could be programmed. The website that listed the product did not say that it was required, only that the key CAN be cut. The whole thing made it appear simple, and you can avoid the dealership cost and all you have to do is program It by following the instructions. I ended up calling a couple of locksmiths after spending about 260 bucks to find out it's going to cost me another $200 or so to get the backup key laser cut in order to program the remote correctly. I contacted my local Advance Auto parts. They weren't sure about if they could take the return as it is normally considered non-returnable electronic device. The store referred to customer service since it was an online purchase and, the rep Christine was absolutely great. She referred me back to my local store to a Manager, I went in. I explained the situation and was stuck where I could not program this device without the Laser cut key as the back up. The store refunded what I paid. The manager had some concern that the OBD II may have been a single use, which Dorman nor Advance Autos website say nothing about. This experience, even though took a few phone calls, retuning the backup fob was great with this retailer. I ended up calling the dealer to schedule and, should say that the Dorman product may work with other vehicles but do your homework ,beyond what I did, before you even plug the OBD device into your vehicle. You also have to follow the instructions exactly because you could end up de-programming, your key fobs, and disabling your vehicle if installed improperly.
