I completely understand that your restroom is for customers only, and I have no issue with that policy. If I had been told I needed to make a purchase before or after using the restroom, I would have. I was in an urgent situation and didn’t even process what the sign really said until I was already heading to the bathroom.
What bothered me was that no employee said anything to me directly. Instead, after I came out and was leaving, I could clearly hear employees talking to each other about me and complaining that I hadn’t bought anything because “there’s clearly a sign on the door.” That was rude, passive-aggressive, and unprofessional, especially with another customer standing there.
If the policy is important enough to complain about, it should be communicated directly and respectfully—not through gossip after the fact. I even turned around and explained my situation before leaving, but the experience had already left a bad impression.
My family has ordered from this location for years, but after this experience we’ll be taking our business to another Subway. I hope management encourages employees to address customers directly and professionally instead of talking about them within earshot, especially when also in front of another customer.
