After many years as an Allstate customer, I finally made the decision to leave, and unfortunately, I wish I had done it much sooner.
At one point, I had a significant amount of business with Allstate through the Michael Feld agency: homeowners insurance on my primary residence, insurance on an investment property, an umbrella policy, and two auto policies. Despite that level of loyalty and never submitting a claim, my premiums continued to increase year after year.
Over the years, I repeatedly contacted Michael Feld and his team looking for ways to reduce my premiums. The answer was essentially always the same: premiums are going up everywhere, the rates are the rates, and there was little or nothing they could do. I trusted that explanation for far too long.
Eventually, after repeatedly being encouraged by others to shop around, I contacted other insurance companies. With just a few phone calls, I received two separate quotes from competitors. Both offered substantial savings. The company I ultimately chose is saving me more than $8,000 annually on my home and auto insurance compared with what I was paying Allstate.
What was particularly disappointing was the response when I contacted the agency about leaving. I was essentially told, “That’s how insurance companies are,” and that customers should regularly compare prices because other companies offer better rates to attract new customers.
That was incredibly frustrating to hear after years of asking my own agency to help lower my costs and repeatedly being told there was nothing that could be done.
My biggest disappointment is with Allstate as a company. In my experience, there was very little value placed on customer loyalty. However, I also expected more advocacy and assistance from an agency that handled multiple policies for me for so many years.
I understand insurance rates increase and every customer’s circumstances are different. But when two competing companies can independently offer thousands of dollars in annual savings, it makes me question why I remained with Allstate for as long as I did.
My advice to longtime Allstate customers is simple: shop around. Don’t assume that because you’ve been loyal for many years and have multiple policies with the company that you’re necessarily receiving a competitive rate.
