Extremely rude, intimidating and unacceptable customer service.
I visited this FedEx location this evening shortly before closing. I waited patiently while the employee on duty finished serving another customer. He was clearly aware that I was waiting, yet once that customer left, he made absolutely no attempt to acknowledge me. Instead, while I was still inside the premises and before I had been properly addressed, he began switching off the lights and locking everything up.
I politely explained that I understood he was closing and that I only had a quick question about the service. His response was shockingly rude and hostile. He told me that it was past his working hours, that it was “my problem” for arriving late, and that he could not help me. He then waved his arms at me in a dismissive “shooing” motion, as though I needed to be chased out rather than spoken to like a customer.
His entire attitude gave me the very strong impression that he simply did not care about providing customer service and was only concerned with shutting everything down and leaving as quickly as possible. If you work in a customer-facing role, you cannot simply ignore a customer who is already standing there waiting, start closing around them, and then treat them with hostility because you want to leave.
I was not demanding that he stay beyond his working hours. I was asking a simple question and expected, at the absolute minimum, to be acknowledged and spoken to with basic courtesy and respect.
More seriously, I felt unsafe when he started turning off the lights and locking the premises while I was still inside, without first acknowledging me or clearly communicating what was happening. Whatever the closing procedure may be, a customer should never be put in a position where they feel they could be locked inside a darkened premises or aggressively ushered out.
There is a professional and respectful way to tell a customer that a location is closing and that no further service can be provided. This was the complete opposite.
His behaviour was verbally aggressive, humiliating and completely unacceptable. He needs to learn how to communicate with members of the public if he is going to work in a customer-facing position. FedEx management should take this seriously, particularly the safety issue of beginning to lock up and switch off the lights while a customer was still inside.
I left feeling both insulted and unsafe. This is not an acceptable standard of customer service and needs to be addressed.
