I have genuinely never felt so disrespected by a business in my life.
I bought a laptop for my 11-year-old daughter’s birthday and wanted to ship it from NC to NY as a surprise. I’ve never shipped a laptop before, so I went to the FedEx at 4301 Atlantic Ave in Raleigh hoping employees could help guide me through the process.
I rushed there straight after work around 7:15 PM. From the moment I walked in, the attitude was cold and dismissive. When I asked which box to use and how to safely package the laptop, I was told rudely, “We don’t help pack boxes,” and “All the supplies are over there.”
I accidentally grabbed the wrong-sized box at first because I genuinely didn’t know what I was doing. Instead of helping, the employee immediately assumed I damaged something and told me I’d have to pay for it.
As I tried packaging the laptop, I was repeatedly rushed and told they were closing, even though it was still before 7:30 PM. After finally getting everything together, I realized I had forgotten my ID. I tried using my FedEx account, but the employee said the payment method needed updating. While I attempted to fix it, I was told, “We have to go home.”
At that point, all I could think about was getting my daughter’s birthday gift shipped.
Things got even worse when a second employee joined in. Both employees followed me outside arguing with me, mocking me, and even joking about my daughter not getting her laptop. Hearing “Haha, your daughter won’t get her laptop” honestly broke my heart.
I never threatened anyone. I never stole anything. I was simply a tired father after work trying to do something nice for his child.
What hurt even more was watching how polite and helpful they were toward customers who were not African American. I hate bringing race into situations, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t leave feeling profiled, unwelcome, and treated like I was some kind of criminal instead of a paying customer.
FedEx seriously needs to look into the customer service culture at this location because nobody deserves to be treated this way. Please avoid the FedEx at 4301 Atlantic ave in Raleigh if you expect compassion, patience and respect.
