SERIOUS HYGIENE CONCERNS
I visited the Subway located inside the Pilot J near Statesville Avenue and Adam Avenue expecting to get one of my favorite Subway meals. Unfortunately, I was so disgusted by the condition of the restaurant that I walked out without ordering anything.
The food-preparation area was filthy. The glass casing over the food was covered in so much grease, fingerprints, smears, and grime that I could barely see the vegetables through it. The vegetables themselves looked extremely unappealing and not fresh. The windows and other areas of the store also appeared dirty. I took pictures because I don't think words alone adequately describe what I saw, and I intend to post them with this review.
What made the experience worse was my interaction with the manager, Mia/Maya. I approached her specifically because the condition of the food area was such a turnoff and I thought management should know. Instead of showing concern, she became defensive and blamed the condition on the lunch rush. The problem with that explanation was that the lunch rush was over and there were no customers in the store at the time. I asked why the glass couldn't simply be wiped down and the area cleaned while the store was empty. Instead of addressing the issue, she refused to have the casing cleaned.
That response was unacceptable. A manager should be concerned when a customer points out a sanitation issue—especially in an area where uncovered food is being prepared and displayed. Her attitude was dismissive, unprofessional, and showed very poor customer-service skills.
I normally would have simply walked away and said nothing, but this was bad enough that I am seriously considering contacting the local health department. Cleanliness around food is not optional. If the customer-facing food area looks this dirty, it raises serious concerns about the overall sanitation of the restaurant.
I could not bring myself to eat there. Management needs to address the cleanliness of this location immediately.
