★☆☆☆☆ "Legally" doubled our premium in two years — know what "Consent to Rate" means before you sign
Our homeowners premium went from $2,780 in 2023 to $5,580 in 2025 — exactly double, in two years, on the same house. Buried in the fine print was something called "Consent to Rate," which lets Allstate charge above the NC Rate Bureau's approved standard rate. Our actual approved rate would have been around $1,118. They charged us 2.5x that.
We filed a complaint with the NC Department of Insurance. Their answer: it's legal, as long as it's disclosed, and as of 2019 NC law doesn't even require your actual consent anymore despite the name — just a notice you'll skim past on your declarations page. NCDOI's advice was basically "shop around," which is exactly what we did.
We switched insurers and our premium dropped from $5,580 to about $2,500 for the same coverage. Same house, same risk, less than half the price. If your renewal jumps and you see "Consent to Rate" anywhere on your paperwork, get a quote elsewhere immediately — you're not getting a fair price, you're getting whatever they think you won't bother to question.
Look for an ethical office and verify EVERYTHING for yourself.

I highly recommend avoiding insurance through Ben Reece’s Allstate agency.
When I first started my policy for two vehicles, my quoted premium was around $180 per month. Over time, the price gradually increased to about $220 without any clear explanation. Later, when I added my brother to the policy, the premium suddenly jumped to nearly $470 per month, and I was never notified of this major increase.
I had to reach out myself to find out what happened. Because I was not willing to pay almost three times my original quoted premium without an explanation, I missed the payment date while waiting for answers. After multiple follow-ups, I was finally told that the increase was related to the additional driver and that they were working on correcting it. However, it took over a week, and during that time I received little to no communication and no updates to my policy.
The lack of responsiveness was extremely frustrating. Most of the time, I only received answers after repeatedly following up. Eventually, I decided to cancel the policy. To make matters worse, I was charged various fees, including termination fees and late fees. When I requested a detailed breakdown of these charges by email, I never received one. In the end, I paid approximately $570 just to cancel the policy.
My biggest issue was not the rate itself, but the poor communication, lack of transparency, and failure to keep me informed about significant policy changes. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this agency.
