We stopped in on 8/16 and found about five people ahead of us in line. One young employee was handling all of the sandwich orders while a second employee, who appeared to be the manager, was standing near the cash register looking bored and making no effort to help. The manager then disappeared to the back, and that's when one of the customers commented on the lack of support the employee making sandwiches was receiving from her co-worker.
A couple of minutes later, the manager returned to the front and slowly put on gloves, clearly appearing annoyed. She then turned her head to cough but ended up coughing directly onto sandwiches that had already been started for two of the three men who had entered together. The manager did not apologize, offer to remake the sandwiches, or acknowledge what had happened. Instead, she simply continued asking for their order. Understandably, all three men walked out.
What happened next was even more disappointing. The manager then began berating her co-worker in front of customers, saying she was sick and blaming the employee for her illness. The employee never responded negatively, continued helping customers, remained polite, and maintained a smile throughout the entire interaction.
Kudos to that young employee for taking the high road and providing excellent customer service despite being put in an uncomfortable situation. She deserves recognition for her professionalism.
Based on what I witnessed, the manager clearly needs additional training and performance evaluation. Her apparent lack of urgency in helping customers, disregard for basic food safety, failure to address a contamination incident appropriately, and willingness to reprimand an employee in front of customers reflect poorly on the restaurant.
