So I asked for a courtesy cup of water, not realizing the water dispenser was on top and the lemonade handle was on the bottom. This was only my second time ever eating at Subway. Out of nowhere, I heard one of the employees loudly say, “Sir, that’s lemonade, not water.” She said it so loudly that everyone immediately turned around and looked at me. It was honestly embarrassing. I hate to even bring race into this, but as an African American man, I truly felt like I was being watched extremely closely over a drink. Meanwhile, I’m diabetic and shouldn’t even be drinking sugary beverages in the first place — all I drink is water. To my friend, a white Caucasian woman who was with me and spent money there just like I did, I’m sorry for the uncomfortable situation and embarrassment. The only reason I’m giving this experience 3 stars instead of less is because of the kind African American employee who was full of joy, positive energy, and professionalism. Please continue being that light. As for the rest of the staff, I hope this serves as a reminder to not judge people by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character and the condition of their heart. One last thing: I’m a proud graduate of UChicago Law School, Class of 2025. Go Maroons! If I had wanted a lemonade, I could have easily purchased one just like I purchased the rest of my items without hesitation.
