I had an extremely disappointing experience with Tom at the Advance Auto Parts location on Beal Parkway next to Walmart.
Today, I attempted to return a defective starter that was purchased on September 1, 2025. I arrived with the original receipt, the defective starter, and credentials for the credit card that was used for the purchase. The only discrepancy was that the starter was in a different box and the purchase was made under a different account holder’s name.
Rather than taking a few minutes to investigate, verify the information, or even contact the account holder, Tom immediately became rude, accusatory, and unprofessional. He accused my partner and me of stealing a part off a vehicle and trying to return it. He even referred to us as “crackheads” during the interaction.
The reality is that I had a valid receipt, the matching defective part, and proof of payment. The starter was less than 10 months old and had failed. I had already paid out of pocket for a replacement starter and labor, so requesting a return on a defective part was completely reasonable.
What makes this even more frustrating is that I took the exact same part, receipt, and documentation to the Advance Auto Parts location in Destin, where the return was processed without issue. Their staff handled the situation professionally and treated me with respect.
Regardless of appearance, no customer deserves to be stereotyped, insulted, or accused of theft when they walk into a store with a receipt and proof of purchase. Tom’s behavior was inappropriate, embarrassing, and completely unacceptable.
Because of this experience, I will never return to the Fort Walton Beach location. I appreciate the Destin store for resolving the issue, but Advance Auto Parts management should be aware of how customers are being treated at the Beal Parkway location.
