This review is my reflection of the food, not the staff , they do not control the quality of their ingredients and as a guest, I control what goes into my sandwich. In this, they are fantastic building the sub I ask for.
The bread? Not much has changed here. The bread is decent quality but very weird that it isn't better for a place that bakes them on site. Compared to the other 2 major chains, J. Mikes and J. John, the bread is subpar.
The toppings? Good selection, fresh, and while not consistent in the amount they put on, if you are there live, you can add more or remove some. I would say this is one of the areas in which they have a small advantage as they have a larger variety of toppings and sauces.
You may wonder, why skip to toppings? Well, if you have visited anytime recently, you will know their meats are the weak point in their sandwiches. The shining star in the bread turns out to be their biggest killer. Cold cut combo - meat all tastes like bologna and while I personally love a nice bologne and cheese sandwich, their bologna is not very good. It very much harbors the flavor of cold hot dogs. Spicy Italian is not very spicy and also harbors some sub par meats, hidden by the overpowering pepperoni that masks it all. Turkey is not bad. Meatballs? They are literally what they describe, a meatball marinating in some tomato sauce. The balls have no seasoning, poor quality meat, and without the sauce, you wouldn't eat them.
Overall my opinion of Subway is in the dumpster end of things. I used to fequent them at least once a week a decade ago, this recent visit was my first in several years. Subpar meats and other things could be overlooked when they were cheap but they are pricing their sandwiches like their superior competitors and then dangling coupons and BOGOs but that aveerages their subs down to about $10. Even at that price point, my local grocer (Safeway) makes better custom sandwiches for less.
Ironically, I used to love their seafood salad sanwich, it was fake crab and all but somehow with some nice toppings, it could be made into a cheap and great little seafood sandwich. They discontinued it over the past years.
