On July 1, 2026, I visited this establishment, as I have on many occasions, to purchase a meal. I am familiar with the posted policy stating that customers will not be served while actively using their mobile devices. Because of my profession, I had my phone in my hand when I entered the store. However, I fully complied with the policy by silencing an incoming call before placing my order and was not actively using my phone while ordering.
I made sure to request all the toppings and modifications I wanted before my sandwich was placed in the microwave. After my order was completed, I proceeded to the register to pay. At that point, Candace came from the back and noticed that I was holding my phone. I was not on a call, texting, or otherwise using my phone. I simply had it in my hand because I was using tap-to-pay to complete my purchase.
While I was waiting to pay, the manager interrupted a conversation with another customer to tell me that I needed to step outside and return when I was off my phone. This was confusing and embarrassing because I was not actively using my phone and had already complied with the store's policy. When I asked for her name, she provided it but immediately stated that she had done nothing wrong before I had even explained why I was asking.
I calmly completed my purchase. What made the situation even more upsetting was that, while I was still inside the store, the manager discussed the incident with other customers within earshot. I found this to be highly unprofessional, disrespectful, and humiliating.
I have been a paying customer of this establishment, and I expect to be treated with the same dignity and respect afforded to every other customer. Based on my experience and the circumstances, including the fact that I was the only person of color in the store at the time, I left feeling that I had been treated differently. I believe my concerns deserve a thorough review.
This experience has significantly changed my perception of this business. No customer who follows the posted policies should be publicly embarrassed or singled out while attempting to pay for their purchase.
