I really wanted to experience Texas — and some experiences I made...
This hotel does get a few important things right. The staff was genuinely friendly, welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, and they immediately moved us when we complained about our room, which had a strong musty odor that bordered on moldy.
Before that we tried to open the windows to air out the room and took a closer look: we not only discovered that it’s not possible to open the windows, but also a bullet hole in the glass. I can only assume that at some point someone tried to solve the ventilation problem the Texas way and attempted to air out the room with a firearm.
I am not convinced it solved the problem.
The second room was a little better, but still smelly. Since we are now staying at another Best Western with a very similar smell (though luckily not as overwhelming), I do wonder whether this might actually come from some new cleaning product being used across multiple locations. Whatever the reason, it is noticeable and very unpleasant.
The property itself looks recently renovated. The rooms are quite large, the beds are comfortable, the bathroom is modern and clean, the water pressure is decent, the pool is small but clean (though without sunshine in the afternoon), and the kitchenette is basic but fine. The gym is very, very simple, but better than nothing.
Noise was the other major downside. The gap under the hallway door is so large that you hear almost everything outside. The nearby interstate is audible too, but the bigger problem was the air-conditioning unit in our room. It takes forever to turn on, so the room gets warm and humid, and then when it finally starts it is loud like a fighter jet and blasts freezing air for a few minutes. The room temperature swings wildly between too hot and too cold. Between that and the noise we slept badly and were too tired to ever make it to breakfast, so unfortunately I cannot comment on that.
In the end I am giving four stars mainly because of the price and the excellent staff. We paid well under $100 per night, and without the genuinely kind team working here this would probably have been a three-star review. As it stands, the hotel feels more like a two-star experience than a three-star property — but at that price it was still acceptable.
