Der Verein dowas hat derzeit 50 Mitglieder und wird von einem sechsköpfigen Vorstand geführt. Historisch geht er auf eine Initiative von MitarbeiterInnen eines Bregenzer Jugendzentrums im Jahr 1981 zurück, die mit einer Gruppe wohnungsloser Jugendlicher konfrontiert waren. Im Jahr 1982 entstand aus dieser Initiative der Verein dowas, der sein Aufgabenfeld über diese Jugendlichen hinaus allgemein in der Hilfe für wohnungs- und arbeitssuchende Menschen sah.
