  My flight from Miami to Chicago was rerouted to Madison due to weather at O'Hare; after several hours, the flight back to Chicago was cancelled. I got online and contacted the hotel closest to the airport: the Holiday Inn at the American Center. It was such a pleasant and welcome end to a very long day: The hotel is clean, its restaurant is excellent (I recommend the salmon), and the service is exceptional -- thanks entirely to Amy at the front desk, who is better at her job than anybody I've encountered in decades of professional travel. From the moment I connected with her from the airport, she delivered on her promise to "take care of it" -- which included booking a taxi (free to me) from and back to the airport in the morning because the shuttle wasn't running, ensuring I got full credit for my airline vouchers, and setting a call-alert to wake me up for the very early return to the airport the next morning -- all while she was providing the same kind of exceptional service to the throngs of people who continued to arrive from the airport. I've always told my own children that you can be the best at whatever you do -- and being the best is what makes a job worth doing. Amy's the best at what she does, and her professionalism and customer service made all the difference after a long and frustrating day. I hope Holiday Inn recognizes how fortunate it is to employ her, because I am certain she makes a positive difference to every traveler who walks into the lobby. Thank you, Amy!

  The staff is very friendly but the hotel is kind of a dump, but then again the prices were reasonable. I guess you get what you pay for.

  Pool area needs some repair and was very cold (not the pool itself, but the pool room if you are sitting in there supervising). Buffet breakfast was great, but not included with your stay; and the fact that you can only pay with a card, not charge to the room or pay cash wasn't ideal. But overall, the hotel was clean and my family enjoyed it - we stayed for a sports tournament in Sun Prairie and it was a great location.

  Plan for an outdated hotel with stained carpet, rusted ceiling ventilation in the pool area, some exercise equipment won’t work, cranky from desk staff and hot water for a shower definitely don’t count on it, on a multi day stay we were without water both days. Front desk just asked us to wait an extra hour for the water heater to catch up.

  While we didn't get a chance to stay, as the hot water heater went out the day we were supposed to, Amy was incredibly helpful and kind in getting our booking resolved. Just the quality of service and care is enough to give this hotel 5 stars in my book.
