I’m local to downtown Madison and regularly have friends and family stay at nearby hotels when they visit, so I’m pretty familiar with most of the downtown options. This Embassy Suites is genuinely one of the best hotels in town.
Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. You’re less than a block from King Street, with great bars and restaurants that skew more “non-university” (a bit more upscale). If you want more of the college bar/restaurant vibe, State Street is about a five-minute walk through Capitol Square. Despite being so central, it’s also surprisingly quiet. Most of the surrounding buildings are residential, so you’re not dealing with a loud bar scene outside your window until 2 a.m.
As of the time of writing, it’s one of the newer downtown properties, and the team has done a fantastic job maintaining it.
While I haven’t personally stayed overnight here, I’ve visited many times when family and friends have been staying. The rooms aren’t massive, but they’re thoughtfully laid out for multiple people, and the bedroom/living room separation gives you real privacy. Every room I’ve seen has been consistently clean, quiet, and comfortable.
If you have Hilton status, don’t expect a lot in the way of upgrades since most rooms are fairly similar aside from bed configuration and accessibility. Views also aren’t a major selling point here, but you’re paying to be in one of the best parts of Madison, and you can find great views within a five-minute walk.
Breakfast is excellent with a good spread plus an omelette station. The bartenders are friendly and the cocktails are legitimately great. For a town with a lot of good bars, the drinks here are above average.
At check-in they provide free drink coupons for happy hour at the bar (I believe it’s 5 to 7 p.m.).
Valet parking is reasonably priced and very efficient from what I’ve seen. There’s also a City of Madison underground garage across the street if you want to save a few dollars, but be aware that city garages have a 48-hour rule. If you don’t move your car after 48 hours, you may be towed (check posted signage to be safe).
Overall, this is an excellent property. If I were visiting Madison, this is the place I’d choose.
Lastly, a special shoutout and thank you to Javier, the Guest Services Manager. He’s helped me more than once with complex bookings for family members that absolutely required his expertise. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never met anyone with such an encyclopedic knowledge of the Hilton booking system. He’s incredibly efficient, friendly, and personable. Even more impressively, he remembered me more than six months after a previous booking. I’ve stayed at plenty of high-end hotels (Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, etc.) with great staff, and I truly mean it when I say Javier is the best front desk professional I’ve ever encountered.
