Absolute hidden gem! National historic registered landmark in a cute town in the VA mountains. I randomly ended up here traveling on business to the Covington area and I loved it!

Giving 3 stars due to bathroom sink stopper did not work (sink was full of water and would not drain) and heat not working properly. Wall thermostat set to 78 and room was chilly. Front desk was no help. We stayed on a Sunday night, room 102.

We picked this hotel as a stopping point in our travels not knowing the historic significance of this particular Hampton Inn. The first indication was the red brick construction, which was different than other Hampton Inns where we have stayed. Then, the front desk where I checked in had a sign on the wall that read Hampton Inn Con Alto. I was told by the manager at the desk that Con Alto meant the place is the highest ground in town. That was only part of the story. Look up Con Alto online and it reveals that it refers to a certain mansion in Lexington VA that once belonged to the state's governor in the mid 1800s. This Hampton Inn is that mansion, and the various additions and ownership changes that happened through the many years. We went to our room, which on the inside was typical for a Hampton Inn room, clean and modern. We were fortunate to get a room with an old-world balcony with a view onto the center square. We learned that there are also historic rooms in this hotel available. At breakfast the next morning, the buffet was in a couple rooms within the original mansion. Signs on the walls explained the architectural and historical significance of Con Alto. What a treat this was to stumble into this place the way we did. A wonderful unexpected surprise, it was!

My wife and I stayed here for a few days while we were in town for a horse show at the Virginia Horse Center, and it was perfect for what we needed. There was plenty of parking, the beds were super comfortable, and the room stayed nice and cold (just how I like it). Water pressure was spot on, too. We brought our 6-month-old Aussie, and the hotel was great about having dogs — plenty of grassy space for walks and enough room in the room for his kennel. Overall, clean, comfortable, and really convenient. We’d definitely stay here again next time we’re in Lexington.
