Let me start by saying that I rarely rate hotels this low unless I’ve truly had a negative experience but this particular stay made my three days in Virginia a complete nightmare. When I checked in on Friday, the front desk staff was pleasant and the process went smoothly. However, the problems began as soon as I reached my room. I had to use my full body weight just to push the door open. The room itself was clean enough to sleep in no bedbugs, tidy bedding but that was the only positive.
Later that night, I started hearing constant noises coming from the roof. The television kept turning off and on by itself, and the WiFi did not work at all. I ended up with no TV, no internet, and nothing to do except sit in silence with my phone. It was miserable.
The next morning, I tried to start fresh and went downstairs for breakfast. Before I could even take a bite of my food, the staff handed me a bill. Let me repeat that: before I even ate anything, I was given a bill. The woman working the area she appeared Ethiopian kept watching me the entire time, which made me extremely uncomfortable. Coming from San Diego to Virginia, I expected some level of hospitality, but instead I felt singled out and unwelcome. I didn’t finish my food; I paid and left to speak with the front desk to understand why I was charged additional fees for the second time.
That night, the same issues continued: noise from the roof, no WiFi, and the TV malfunctioning. My patience was wearing thin. I told the manager how uncomfortable I was, and although she gave me a breakfast voucher as a courtesy, the situation repeated itself. Once again, at breakfast, I was handed a bill while no white guests around me received one. It was hard not to feel like I was being targeted because I am Black. The same employee kept staring at me, and it made the entire experience extremely uncomfortable.
By Sunday, I was exhausted from two nights of no sleep, no TV, and no internet. The manager offered to move me to another room, but at that point, I was mentally drained and declined. She did remove my parking charges, but I had already returned the rental car, so it didn’t help.
Overall, I did not enjoy my stay at all. I felt watched, uncomfortable, and treated like a problem instead of a paying guest. The room itself was fine, but days without WiFi, without a working TV, and without proper rest could drive anyone crazy. Housekeeping never even came to clean or service the room during my stay.
This was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve ever had.
