See the original Oregon, Mormon, and California Trail. Hear the powerful story of Pioneers enduring harsh conditions to seek religious freedom.

Martin’s Cove – A Peaceful Hidden Gem I had the place all to myself (besides the incredibly gracious missionaries who showed me around and shared powerful stories from the past). It was wonderful, but the museum truly touched my heart—artifacts from around the world, plus incredible pieces from the Sun family that owned the land and the Native Americans in the area. I’ve never seen a bigger collection of arrowheads or such beautiful Native and European clothing and dishes. I even got to pick up a heavy cash box that once traveled on a stagecoach—I’d only read about it in my ancestor’s journals from the early 1800s, but holding it was an entirely different, emotional experience. So moving and unforgettable! ❤️

In August 2025, we visited the Martin's Cove Visitor's Center in Martin's Cove, Wyoming. Martin's Cove is about halfway between Rawlins, Wyoming and Casper, Wyoming, and it is in a remote location. Between 1856 and 1860, 10 different Mormon Handcart Companies began the final stretch of their Westward trek to the Utah Territory from this Martin's Cove, Wyoming site. Most of the Mormon Handcart Pioneers had a successful trek, and 2 Handcart Companies, the Martin and Willie Handcart Companies, experienced early Winter, starvation, and even death during their trek. The buildings are well-maintained and clean, and the Visitor's Center has clever and colorful displays. Senior Couple LDS Missionaries are present to answer questions and provide tours. We are grateful for the sacrifices that these early Mormon Handcart Pioneers made. These Mormon Handcart Pioneers could find a better life, and they could peacefully follow their religious convictions in the Utah Territory.
