Great location near Woodman’s grocery, a nice park (caught a nice music event), highway & restaurant options. Amazing, great service by front office & breakfast housekeeping teams.

I have stayed at this hotel 3 out of the last 4 years visiting friends on Lake Altoona and never had a problem. This year I discovered my door didn’t lock when closed. I slammed the door shut, pulled on it multiple times to make sure it was closed, pushed on it, and it opened without a key. This happened multiple times.
I notified the front desk at 11am. The woman said she’d have maintenance fix it. I returned about 12 hours later and opened the door without a key again. Before checking out the next morning, I tried the door one more time to make sure, and it opened right up without a key.
When I checked out, I let the manager know and how pissed I was that the door didn’t lock and all my belongings were unsecured for 3 days. The manager was very nice; she apologized and said she’d investigate what happened and get back to me. I let her know you had to push hard, but it opened. She said she understood.
A little over 24 hours later I hadn’t heard from her, so I called for an update. The woman who answered the phone said the manager was busy cleaning rooms but would get back to me shortly.
An hour later I received an email from the manager saying she tried to open the door and it was locked. She said she also put one of their “regulars” in the room the night I checked out, and that person said the door locked. She offered me 1,000 IHG points for my inconvenience. I responded telling her I tried the door right before walking downstairs to speak with her, and it opened right up without a key. I asked if she could check the security cameras in the hallway that would prove I opened the door without a key. She responded ignoring that request and again said the door locked fine but she’ll give me 1,000 points. 1,000 points is 3.8% of the cost of 1 night at that hotel…what a joke. If I was making something up to try and get free stuff, you’d think I’d come up with a better lie than the door doesn’t lock.
My wife told me to go up with the manager to show her the door opens without a key, but I made the mistake of thinking she was an honest, decent person. That is a mistake I will not make again. I will be staying at an Airbnb from now on, and I suggest everyone else does the same.

From the outside, this Staybridge looks great. Inside? It feels like it’s been patiently waiting for a renovation since the early 2000s.
Let’s start with the “pet-friendly” claim because that’s what brought us here. My toy poodle and I felt pet-shamed the entire stay. No dogs in the Great Room. Fine, I get that. But no dogs in the courtyard either? The courtyard… outside… with the grass. The signs even say the grass is “not a potty spot.” Well then, where exactly is the potty spot?
After wandering around looking like I was on a scavenger hunt, I finally found the designated dog area—which no one mentioned at check-in. It’s basically a tiny patch of grass. Luckily I have a toy poodle. If I’d brought a Labrador, we’d have needed to schedule potty breaks in shifts. Just advertise the rooms as pet-friendly because the hotel itself clearly isn’t.
The room definitely needs some TLC. The TV is outdated and doesn’t support streaming. The bathroom is tiny. The trash cans in the room are tiny. The trash cans by the elevators are tiny too. Honestly… what’s going on with hotels and these miniature garbage cans? Are guests just expected not to generate trash?
The dishwasher still had dirty dishes in it from the previous guest, which wasn’t exactly a warm welcome.
The free laundry room sounds like a great perk until you actually look inside the washers. They were so dirty I wasn’t sure if I’d be washing my clothes or seasoning them. They looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time.
One thing that really stood out was that the poor front desk employee seemed to be doing everything. Every time I turned around, he was either checking guests in or in the laundry room washing hotel linens. He was clearly pulling double duty as front desk and housekeeping. He was friendly and working hard, but one person shouldn’t have to carry the whole operation.
The biggest mystery of my stay? How is this place sitting at 4 stars? Maybe I caught it on an off week, but based on my experience, I genuinely don’t understand it.
This hotel has good bones and was probably fantastic years ago, but it’s overdue for some updates, better maintenance, and a clearer definition of what “pet-friendly” actually means. There’s definitely potential here—it just needs some investment and a little more love.
