Virginia, and combine with Cointreau and lemon juice.

Lost power and was not refunded the night we didn’t stay
My thoughtful husband booked a two-night stay for my birthday from the night of 8/15 to check out on 8/17
Checking in was easy. Front desk was nice. The room that we got wasn’t too spacious (our 3 kids prefer the spaciousness of Hilton Homewood suites and the like) but it made up for it with the little patio space and easy access to go outside so that we could take our dog out. Not too bad for just a couple of nights.
On the 16th we had breakfast at The Mill Room. Upon arrival (around 8:50am) the hostess was confused when we said we prepaid for breakfast. She continued to look confused about us pre-paying online. My husband shrugged and decided let’s just deal with it later and sit down to eat. I don’t know if it’s something that they just started and she was not familiar with, but I thought it was odd.
Once we sat down to eat, she came back and she said “oh you got a breakfast package?!” And then proceeded to explain how we charge it to the room and how it gets deducted from the amount we prepaid.
The breakfast was good with a selection of the typical items like: eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon as well as pastries and chia pudding. The freshly made waffles were my favorite.
That day we had planned to visit some vineyards and an Orchard, do the typical family Charlottesville experience and then get back to use the sports facility and the pool. It was storming on the way back, so we knew that we weren’t going to be able to use the pool. When we were entering the building a gentleman who was also staying there said they had lost power and the whole property seemed to be without power.
There were no lights on. There didn’t seem to be a generator powering emergency lights or anything like that. Thankfully, our room door did open with our card.
This was a bit before 8pm. When my husband called guest services, they said to give it about an hour. I’m not sure if this is what the power company gave them or if this was just an estimated time they came up with.
An hour later, we still didn’t have power. My husband is a business owner and as much as we want to be unplugged when we have family time. It’s not realistic. He needs to be available for any emergencies having to deal with his business or his elderly parents. We decided that we couldn’t stay the night in a hot hotel room since the AC didn’t have power (it was so hot and humid) and risk not being able to charge our devices.
Guest services told him that he wouldn’t be charged for the night so we booked with a different hotel, packed up our belongings in the dark with the little light we could get from our phone flashlights. Hopefully we didn’t miss anything, but we packed everything in the dark and left around 9pm.
On the 17th we checked out of the NEW hotel that we booked and drove back 3 hours to our home. My husband saw that we were indeed charged for the night of the 16th so he called the next day, which was Tuesday the 18th around 5:45pm. He left a message with our room number and information requesting that it be refunded. He did not receive a call back. He also tried to emailing but that just bounced back like their email isn’t working.
It is now 8/21 and we still have not received back any information regarding the stay being refunded as well as the “breakfast package” for five people, for that following morning.

First off - I want to say that the resort is wonderful. The grounds are beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxing, the meeting rooms were perfect and the golf course is extremely well-maintained. Unfortunately my trip was severely tarnished with the theft of my engagement ring during turn-down service. I removed the ring from my finger for 4 hrs while I played a round of golf. It was secured in a jewelry pouch hidden in my makeup case. When I came back to the room - it was gone. Needless to say I am in legal proceeding over it. I am taking the time to write this review so you do not make the same mistake as I did. DO NOT leave anything if value in your room. If you do- I did find out after the fact that there is a room safe hidden in the lower drawer of a nightstand. DO NOT trust your turn-down service.

As my husband and I took my daughter to Boston, we had the trip planned out to hit places that were on our bucket list. I was excited to stay at this resort because it reminded me of the resort in Dirty Dancing. In one sense, there are a lot of great activities on site (tennis, pickleball, golf, etc), but the room we stayed in was disappointing, with the exception of the lake view, but it needed some updates for sure. The room was clean, which is most important, but the sink wouldn't drain, the bathroom door was difficult to shut, the paint was chipped in the room, and the security door to gain access to the rooms, did not lock. Also, the bed was not comfortable at all, and actually sunk in the middle. Check in service was fine but not friendky. The breakfast in the Mill Room was beautiful and delicious. That was the best part. Overall, not what I expected from a resort of this level.

We just finished staying here for the weekend while my husband attended a conference. The same problems have continued over the past two summers. The A/C in the rooms can not keep up in hot weather (as many others have said) and everything is really tired in the main lobby and rooms (popped ottoman buttons, stained upholstery). It is also too pet friendly ( it is one thing to have large dogs in a patio room but one was placed in a second floor room in the main building). However, the largest problem is that the resort sells memberships to locals and they completely overrun the resort on weekends leaving nothing for paying guests. This is the worst in the adults only spa pool. There are only 4 umbrellas for 30 chairs and cabanas are reserved until 12:30 (which in more than 3 summers I have never seen anyone pay for) which is a waste of seating. The resort allows outside food and beverage so locals roll in with their coolers and food and stay all day and resort paying guests are out of luck. Spa guests are also allowed to use the pool so a group of 12 local women celebrating a bachelorette spa day marked chairs all day as they rotated in and out of having spa services. I know this from other summers so I got there right when the pool opened, but other guests were livid they were paying to stay at a resort overrun by the locals. The resort needs more umbrellas and seating (no one wants the round tables so take them out and add more chairs) and to limit those with memberships access to the spa pool on summer weekends and not allow outside food and beverages. They overrun the bar and restaurant as well. I can't even imagine what it is like at the large family pool!

Wonderful staff and beautiful location with attentive service, exceptional food and beverage, and luxury amenities. I have planned many corporate retreats before in a variety of settings and this, by far, was the best planning experience I've had with a location. Holly and Selah were fantastic in the planning process and Emily, Angelo, Johanna, Daniel, and Diamond made our entire event experience smooth and luxurious. Our teams hiked the trails on site, golfed at the Birdwood Golf Course, utilized the sports complex, received massages at the spa, and took advantage of the adult pool cabanas. All activities received high ratings and we loved the variety of what was offered without leaving the grounds. I highly recommend this location for any corporate event or for an outdoor getaway!
