My husband and I haven't had time away for a while, so for Memorial Day weekend, we decided we would make an impromptu trip home to Texas to visit with family and friends. Normally, we would crash at someone's house but we wanted this visit to be a surprised, so we decided to treat ourselves with a hotel stay. I researched hotels in the area and it came down to SureStay and the Comfort Suites across the shared parking. I looked through reviews and decided on SureStay, despite the fact that 8 months ago there was a review similar to the one I will be leaving. The other reviews were all 4 and 5 stars from that point on, so I thought there had been some changes, and maybe there have been but not in the room we stayed in.
We checked in late Friday night and out early Sunday morning. The lady at the desk was very nice but seemed a bit distracted during our check-in and check-out. It took longer to get checked in than we expected, but we were eventually on our way to the room. The lobby was clean but the hotel overall was loud, like the rooms aren't well insulated. We get to the elevator and honestly, after the initial ride up, I told my husband I felt safer taking the stairs. The elevator started moving before the doors were closed, then it jerked to a stop so the doors could close. The ride up 1 floor was nerve racking because it was a rough, noisy ride. The elevator inspection is not up in the elevator and there is nothing listed about it being at the front dest either. The floors in the hallway on the way to our room were uneven and very noticable underfoot. We get to the room and unfortunately it didn't get better. The walls are cracking, patch jobs that are poorly done and stick out like a sore thumb, and that's just walking in the room. We set our stuff down and the first thing my husband does is turn on the TV to check out ESPN. The remote is an absolute nightmare. It's been chewed up so bad that the buttons are missing and the only thing that works is the power button and the volume buttons. We still needed to get the rest of our things from the care, so we took the remote with us and went back downstairs. We asked the desk attendant if she had a remote that wasn't chewed up and worked, and she said that she couldn't gaurantee anything. My husband worked for Charter/Sprctrum cable for many years and changed out remotes for hotels all the time. I recommend asking for replacements so your guests don't have to worry about what kind of unsanitary nightmare they are touching just so they can watch a little tv from the bed. The remote she gave us looked so much worse but worked, as long as you didn't mind missing buttons and habing to stick your fingers in to the remote to touch the up and down triggers. After getting the rest of our stuff upstairs, my husband was going to take a shower and I needed to wash my face. Neither of us showered because it wasn't clean. The water didn't drain right, the tub was dirty, the tile was cracking, the silicone caulcking was missing in places and only 1 tiny bottle of shampoo and a bar of soap. I brought my own supplies because of a review I read and if I would have felt comfortable using the shower, I would have been glad I did. I washed my face in the sink but had to rinse the washcloth in the bathtub because the faucet is too small for the sink and the water barely clears the back wall of the sink bowl. We even had to rinse our toothbrushes off in the bathtub due to this. The lamps didn't all work and the couple that did felt like they were about to fall apart. The safety bolt was broken so we only had the deadbolt.
Thankfully, the bed and linens were clean. My husband and pulled everything off the bed to check. The bed and pillows were comfortable as well.
We really only used the room to sleep, so other than not feeling comfortable enough to take a shower during our (thankfully short) stay, these things didn't affect us too much, otherwise we would have been requesting a refund immediately and going to Comfort Suites. Not recommended unless serious changes are made.
