- KBKaren BuchtienJun 2, 20264.0After a long day of driving from Dillon, CO, to Longmont for a meeting and then on to Amarillo, we arrived exhausted. The hotel’s location is convenient with easy interstate access, though the construction and row of cones at the entrance make finding your way in a bit of an adventure. Check-in took a little while, but the front desk attendant was friendly and explained it was her first night working solo, so grace was warranted. The room was large and initially looked clean. The A/C, however, was set to “Arctic Expedition.” In 64 years, I’ve never turned the heat on in Texas in June, but there’s a first time for everything. Then I stepped into the bathroom. Hair on the floor, hair on the shower wall, a shower drain that looked like it had seen better decades, and a loose door jamb that announced its presence every time the door moved. The coffee bar sink looked like it had been overlooked for quite a while as well. At that point, I was too tired to argue, so I removed the shower-wall hairs myself, pretended I was using a campground shower, and carried on. The bed was comfortable—or maybe I was just that tired. The blinking smoke detector light directly above the bed tried its best to become my nightlight, and later the upstairs guests arrived and spent some time auditioning for a herd of elephants. Breakfast the next morning was standard Holiday Inn fare and perfectly acceptable. Overall, the location was convenient, the staff was pleasant, and the bed was comfortable. But the cleanliness and maintenance issues kept this stay from living up to the reviews that brought me there in the first place.
