me and my family are on a week trip through South in North Dakota. This was a perfect location for our plans and had a great scenic view. The people at the front desk were very kind and directed us straight to our room. our room was nice old-fashioned but it did the job. The hot tub was very nice but a bit small. The pool was good. The showers drain was clogged, which made me a little bit sad. The beds were comfortable. we left very in the morning so we didn’t get to try the breakfast. I think this is a great option for your stay.

To Whom It May Concern: I would like to provide a review of our recent stay at the Best Western Golden Spike/Black Hills Luxury Suites, specifically Room 274, and express my concerns regarding the condition of the property and the value provided for the price charged. We paid nearly $300 per night for what is advertised as a “luxury suite.” Unfortunately, based on our experience, I do not believe the room meets that description. Given the price being charged, I would expect a significantly higher standard of cleanliness, maintenance, furnishings, and overall condition. The room appears to have been furnished and maintained much as it might have been when it was originally built, possibly in the 1970s. While I understand that maintaining a property can be expensive, the current condition of this room indicates that it is in significant need of updating and investment. For your consideration, I have included photographs documenting several of the issues we encountered. Among them are: ● The ceiling fans have no lights, requiring guests to enter a completely dark room and locate lamps before having adequate lighting. ● The lamps are difficult to operate, and one lamp had a lightbulb hanging by its electrical wire. ● Another lamp had a non-functioning lightbulb. ● One of the coat hangers was broken. ● The carpeting is dated, stained, and worn. ● The stove appears to be original to the room and is extremely outdated. ● The couch and chairs are worn, stained, and very uncomfortable. ● At least one overhead light fixture appeared to contain dirt or bugs. ● The transition strip between the carpeting and kitchen area is badly scuffed and worn. ● The mirror above the vanity, particularly the area surrounding the buffalo design, was not properly cleaned. ● One of the vanity sinks was broken. ● The hairdryer was barely attached to the wall by a single screw. ● The curtains appear extremely old, worn, and outdated. Several are shredded around the windows. ● The window seals and surrounding felt are deteriorated, with portions of the felt falling down and the window areas not properly cleaned. ● There are no nightstands beside either side of the bed in either bedroom, leaving no convenient place for guests to set phone chargers, a portable fan, or a CPAP machine. ● The bench by the front door is stained and dirty. I also noticed while walking past other rooms that the curtains appear to be in similarly poor condition. In some cases, the damage is clearly visible from outside the building. This creates a very poor impression of the property, particularly for a hotel charging nearly $300 per night for accommodations advertised as luxury suites. At this price point, guests should reasonably expect a well-maintained, updated, and comfortable room. What we experienced was more consistent with a dated 1970s-era accommodation that has received very little meaningful updating. To put the value into perspective, for approximately the same amount of money, I can take a cruise and receive significantly better accommodations, substantially better food than the breakfast currently offered in the Best Western lobby, and a modern, well-maintained room. That makes it difficult for me to understand the value of what is being advertised and priced as a luxury suite. I believe the owners and management need to make a significant investment in updating these rooms and bringing them up to the standard that the term “luxury suite” implies. The current condition does not justify the price being charged. I have attached several photographs to this email for your review and documentation of the conditions described above. I hope management will take these concerns seriously and use them as an opportunity to improve the property and the guest experience. Our stay was August 7–10, 2026. Thank you for taking the time to review my concerns. I was not able to attach every photo i took, but most are there

Great place to stay while visiting the black hills. Staff was friendly, hotel was clean. Breakfast was above average. Your with in a hour of pretty much any attraction in the black hills if not closer. Did I say the staff was friendly?!? Beds were pretty comfortable and over all fairly quiet for being a hotel. Indoor and outdoor pool along with some nice outdoor seating all around the facility. Very happy, would stay there again when visiting the area.

As a BW Diamond Member, my experience with this hotel was amongst the worst I have had as a business traveler - at one of the major chains. In advance of check-in, I called and spoke with the front desk, asking specifically to be placed in a room away from the lobby on the top floor. When I arrived, I was offered a room immediately adjacent to the lobby on the bottom floor. When I protested, I was (quite quickly) handed a key to the room directly above this (220). The room was dark and the window looked directly out onto the brick wall of the hotel elevator shaft. With the window shade up, guests waiting for the elevator could see into the room. Overall, the room was as you'd expect from a basic BW - thin sheets, rough towels, U-shaped bed. I didn't expect more. Upon check-out, the same unfriendly desk clerk that checked me in refused to give me a late check-out - even though I had observed (and it was the case on my day of departure) that the hotel emptied out by 8AM - so that giving me until 1 PM wouldn't have even flustered the housekeeping staff, as they were bogged down with other rooms. Breakfast was managed by a nice fellow, but the overall selection was bare bones and there was a clear effort to try to make the amounts and quality as low as possible to deter folks from either taking too much or taking it with them. I think it worked. I'm sure there are other options in Hill City - I would explore them if I ever return.

We enjoyed everything! We really loved our room (#150). It was spacious, clean & updated, we were so happy!!!!! Also, really enjoyed the outdoor pool during the hot days and walking my little 6 lb poodle in your well kept dog area several times a day (real grass! Cement walking path, too). It is lovely!! The grounds are well kept! The grass was getting watered by your inground sprinkler system daily and everything was just kept up and so CLEAN! The Golden Spike will now be the only hotel we stay in during our yearly summer family vacations with our adult children & grandkids. I have already told many family & friends how great The Golden Spike is and that they should try it next time they are in the hills. I actually stayed that The Golden Spike when I was a kid, with my family, for the first several years it was opened, in the 1970s & spent most of my time in the outdoor pool. Not sure why it took me so long to decide to try it again after 45+ yrs, but we all loved it!! We have stayed at some good, and unfortunately, some bad (dirty, not updated) hotels & cabins in the hills over the years, but now we've found our forever hotel. 😊 Please continue to keep working hard in keeping up The GoldenSpike with new updates as needed and keeping it super clean. AND please don't ever get rid of your outdoor pool. We love & enjoyed it so much. They aren't many of them in the black hills. When it's time to update your outdoor pool we are hoping you will consider replacing it with one that's larger so there is more room for family fun & swimming laps, too. We'll continue to spread the word on what a great hotel this is!! We love Hill City & the majestic Black Hills of South Dakota! ❤️
