I stayed at IHG Barclay on business for six nights from [insert check‑in date] to [insert check‑out date]. On arrival I was assigned an accessible room that was poorly maintained: there were no cupboards and the shower had an old curtain rather than a proper screen/door. After I raised these issues with reception the hotel moved me to a different room which was acceptable. At check‑out I received an invoice showing an “amenity fee” charged on my card left for incidental expenses but at lease there was an invoice for it. After I returned home I noticed a large transaction on my card. I have contacted the hotel multiple times asking for an explanation and a reversal, but I have not received any clarification or refund.

Nickel-and-diming, price gouging: -$13 for a bottle of the hotel's house water, $30 for a grilled cheese, $40 for a burger and 44% on top of room service. Not even professional sports on the hottest day or airports charge that much. They also don't tell you it's $13. That's unreasonable even for NYC; this year I've stayed at NYC St. Regis, Ritz, and Waldorf Astoria and they all charged less for higher quality offerings. Forget $13/bottle, they will give you so many free bottles you don't know what to do with them. Feeling nickel-and-dimed or like I'm dealing with tight-fisted people really diminishes a stay for me. Miserly service and actual dishonesty -even going early, you have to wait in a line to get put on the list for breakfast because there's maybe 50-70 seats for 700+ rooms and the hotel hasn't chosen to expand that. -The front office manager, Dominic, was miserly, uncooperative, and dishonest to me, an approach that perhaps trickles down to his staff (someone else told me a lie, too). I wanted to cancel and rebook (only way with an Edit booking) a larger room a few hours after the free cancellation window closed. The fee is protect hotels against guests not coming, but I was still coming, a distinction that I've never had trouble being understood in the past- I've never had a hotel not work with me on something like that. Dominic took two days to refuse this request, then he lied to me that it wasn't his decision and he didn't have a problem with it, it was IHG who was denying. It took me two hours and talking to 4 people at IHG and guest relations to figure out he'd lied to me on top of refusing a reasonable request. Room issue: -I had a room right next to the cleaning closet so I got to hear the cleaning carts go in and out. It seemed at times like I was next to a bowling alley.

OVERPROMISED BUT UNDERDELIVERED as Platinum Elite and Ambassador Members. In this day and age, I couldn't imagine I'd be writing a racism comment in the reviews especially in NYC. I have never disliked anything to the point of never returning other than our stay here. This place lacks communication, hospitality and borderline racist. Not even it's proximity to Grand Central can make up for it. Paint are chipping off in rooms and hallways. The flowers are wilted in the lobby. Lighting is dark. The entrance smells fungal. Some bathrooms are heated, some are don't. Bidet does not work. Few months ago, we stayed in this hotel with lounge access. As part of the Ambassador status we are entitled to for a late check out subject to availability. Check out is 11am. Around 2pm, we went to the lounge but as I was about to grab a sandwich, the lounge staff approached my family and told us that access is only until breakfast in day of check out. Imagine the embarassment of returning the plate. We actually apologized but we confirmed that during check out, as Ambassadors we are entitled to have lounge access until 2pm. With that experience, in our 2nd time at the hotel I told my husband to confirm with concierge if really have access. The concierge responded that yes we have until 4pm. Around 12:30pm, I went to the lounge to grab a drink but I was told by the lounge staff despite showing the concierge's message that we have access until 2pm, I was told after breakfast it is subjet for fee. Although I have no problem paying in case required, what dismayed me is the lack of communication and uniformity across the board and I as the customer was subject to embarassment. I was even told, "who told you that?" I said we confirmed it from the concierge while showing the message. Upon check out, we asked for the manager of the lounge to sort things out as these happened twice already. The manager came, no introduction of himself, no handshake. The goal of the discussion is to find clarity once and for all and maybe for future visit we can have the same understanding regarding the access for Ambassadors. But the interaction with the manager sealed the deal. He made remarks such as "Here in the United States documentation is very important" and "There are some guests who mistreats their access if their flight is at 8pm they stay until 6pm even if they canstay until 4pm". Totally irrevelant from our concern and we live in New York and it's not our first shenanigan in a lounge in the hotel as we stay in Conrad, Ritz or Waldorf from time to time for a staycation. He left and not even once apologized. For the benefit of future visitors, maybe train your staff about basic customer service, etiquette and manners.

The InterContinental New York Barclay delivered on every front. The lobby and facilities are stunning, and the InterContinental Club Lounge was an absolute highlight. An impressive breakfast spread, warm and attentive hosts, afternoon snacks, and an evening happy hour. In a city where everything costs a fortune, the lounge alone made the stay feel like a steal. The room was immaculate. Everything felt freshly renovated, with that crisp, brand-new feel from the moment you walked in. Pristine linens, plush towels, and a gorgeous bathroom. I’ve stayed at other Manhattan hotels and paid twice the rate for a fraction of the experience. I’m a Hyatt Globalist, so straying from my home brand isn’t something I take lightly. But the combination of value, location, and quality made this an easy call. I’d make the same choice again without hesitation. We’ll definitely be back.

If you are booking using the Chase portal with the intent to use your card benefits, I would urge you to reconsider. This is shown as a "the Edit" property on the portal which I guess I misinterpreted to mean it was held at a higher standard. Hotel specific complaints: -Shower was slow draining, to the point where my feet were completely submerged while using it, don't have much to say on this other than it was disgusting. Was fixed the next day after I asked what they could do about it. Wish I didn't have to be the one to discover the issue though. -shower head has mold on it. Also gross -waited in line for breakfast in the morning for about 20 minutes while the host seemed to avoid eye contact. No acknowledgement of us waiting in line to be added to list or anything for that whole time. Booking as part of a chase hotel complaints: -inquired about the "in room welcome" amenity 3 times before receiving a small mousse cup -used $100 hotel credit in room service. Although after tip, service fee AND delivery fee it was more like a $40 hotel credit -on ordering room service waited an hour for them to call and let me know it was delivered to the wrong room (it eventually made it to me, but the food was cold by then.) With that being said the location was great. The "Premium high floor king" room was average, without any impressive views. It wasn't an irredeemable stay, I just wish I would have weighed other options rather than trusting it was an above average hotel.
