I had a fantastic stay at HGU New York. I especially want to recognize Selina , the manager, and Isaiah at the front desk — they run a very tight ship and are consistently welcoming, professional, and attentive. The housekeeping team is also excellent.
The suites are spacious, comfortable, and very well maintained, with excellent linens and towels and thoughtful amenities like robes, slippers, and an iron. The location is fantastic, especially if you’re attending an event at Madison Square Garden — it’s just a few minutes away.
The lobby is a great space, and the rooftop is a nice bonus. There’s no rooftop service, but it’s furnished and makes for a lovely place to relax. The breakfast/coffee shop has tasty food and good variety, although service there can be slow and the staff could be a bit friendlier.
Overall, HGU was a really pleasant surprise. It’s not an ultra-luxury hotel, but for the price, it offers excellent value, a great location, and a very solid four-star experience. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

I spend at least 100 nights per year in hotels, approximately 80% of them with Hilton. I have never written a negative hotel review before. Unfortunately, this was the worst hotel stay I have experienced, attributable to consistent staff issues starting with the booking process.
Booking / pre-arrival communication: Before arrival, I contacted the hotel’s Front Desk to confirm that my wife, who would arrive approximately three hours before me, could check in. I explicitly asked that she be added to the reservation. I was given verbal confirmation by the Front Desk that this would be accommodated.
Check-in failure: When my wife arrived, the hotel did not honor that confirmation and refused to allow her to check in (same last name, printed booking confirmation). She had to wait approximately three hours until I arrived. This was not an unusually early check-in request; it was simply a matter of allowing the registered guest to access the room as previously confirmed.
Diamond benefits: No Hilton Diamond benefits were not honored.
Billing: There were also issues with the final billing, requiring additional time and multiple interactions with the hotel staff to resolve.
Management response: What was particularly concerning was the handling of the situation by the Front Office Manager (Luis/Louis?). I had to go through multiple rounds of discussion simply to address what should have been a straightforward service failure. During those conversations, I was effectively told that the prior verbal confirmation had never occurred, despite my having spoken directly with the Front Desk before arrival. In other words, the hotel’s response was to dispute my account of the conversation rather than take ownership of the failure.
Overall standard: For a property positioned within Small Luxury Hotels and associated with Hilton, I expect a significantly higher level of service, consistency, and accountability. The combination of the booking issue, failure to honor the check-in arrangement, Diamond benefits not being recognized, billing problems, and the subsequent management response fell substantially below that standard.

A wonderful stay in New York – and an exceptional employee
We had a wonderful stay at HGU New York and would definitely recommend this hotel, especially for a city trip to New York.
We stayed in a King Standard room, which was bright, comfortable and pleasantly spacious for Manhattan. It was definitely not one of those tiny New York hotel rooms – there was enough space to feel comfortable and relax after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. The bathroom had everything we needed, and the air conditioning was excellent, which was a huge plus during the hot summer days. Coming back to a cool, comfortable room after being outside in the heat was wonderful.
The location is simply fantastic. The hotel is only about two blocks from the Empire State Building, and the nearest subway station is just around 100 metres away. There is a Pret A Manger less than a minute away, as well as other coffee, juice and food options and several supermarkets nearby. Fifth Avenue is easily reachable on foot, and you are right in the middle of everything while still having a comfortable and quiet place to return to after a busy day in the city.
HGU itself is a small but very charming hotel – small, elegant and very well located. For us, it was an ideal base for exploring New York.
Unfortunately, we never got the chance to use the rooftop. It was closed during our stay because of weather forecasts, and it also closes in the evening, so we unfortunately never got to see it. We would have really liked to experience it, as it looks like a lovely feature of the hotel.
There was also one occasion when our room was not cleaned. We went down to reception and were assured that it would still be taken care of, but unfortunately it wasn’t. This was a little disappointing, although it did not change our overall positive impression of the hotel.
What really made our stay special, however, was Issaiah Molina.
Issaiah was absolutely exceptional. He was incredibly friendly, polite and attentive throughout our entire stay. Every time he saw us, he genuinely seemed happy to see us and would ask how we were doing, what we had been up to that day and what we were planning for the next day. It felt very personal and sincere – not like standard hotel service.
He was also extremely helpful when we had problems with our Mets tickets and the Citi Bike app. Both required verification with a US phone number, which we obviously could not do with our Austrian phone number. Issaiah very kindly and immediately helped us by using his phone number so that we could complete the verification and get everything working. He made the whole process incredibly easy for us.
He is also a Mets fan, so when we came back from the Mets game, he immediately asked us how it was. Those little personal interactions made such a difference. Employees like Issaiah are rare. He was genuinely caring, enthusiastic and welcoming, and he made us feel very well looked after.
HGU is lucky to have someone like him on the team.
Overall, we had a great stay and would happily choose HGU New York again on our next visit to Manhattan. Great location, comfortable rooms, excellent air conditioning and, above all, wonderful personal service from people like Issaiah.
Thank you for making our New York trip even more enjoyable!
