We stayed at the Garner Hotel in Missoula as loyal IHG travelers who regularly stay at multiple IHG brands across Canada, the United States, and internationally. We especially enjoy Holiday Inn Express properties and have also had positive experiences at Staybridge Suites. Unfortunately, this property did not meet the standards we normally associate with IHG.
The best way to describe this hotel is a very budget-oriented IHG property that feels like an older motel/hotel building that has gone through multiple renovations and ownership changes over the years. The fresh paint and newer-looking carpets help cosmetically, but it still feels like a heavily worn property underneath the surface. Hallways had an unpleasant stale smell, and while the rooms were freshly painted, the overall building condition still felt dated and tired.
We stayed in Room 123 on the main floor with one queen beds. The room itself was functional, the AC worked well, and the TV was surprisingly massive, which was honestly one of the highlights of the room. However, our window faced directly at vehicle headlights at nearly window height, so every late-night arrival lit up the room. Rooms on the opposite side of the building likely avoid this issue.
As Diamond members, we also found room selection somewhat limited, and we were unable to secure a king-bed room.
The breakfast experience was confusing. The hotel served scrambled eggs, shredded meat, salsa, and shredded cheese, clearly intended for breakfast burritos, yet there were no tortillas or wraps available to actually make burritos. It felt incomplete. It was also advertised as a Mother’s Day breakfast special with waffles, but there were no typical waffle toppings available. No syrup, whipped cream, fruit toppings, or anything similar beyond jam packets and peanut butter intended for toast. We genuinely stood there wondering what we were supposed to put on the waffles.
Another thing frequent IHG travelers may notice: there were no signature cinnamon rolls commonly found at many Holiday Inn Express locations.
On the positive side, the property is pet-friendly, which is likely one of its strongest selling points for travelers crossing Montana with animals. There also appeared to be a decent recreation/game area for children with items like a pool table and air hockey, which families may appreciate.
Overall, this is probably a “works for one night if needed” type of property, especially if traveling with pets, but it is not somewhere we would personally return to unless there were no other suitable options available in the area.
