The hotel itself is pretty good, but the staff is another story. I was going to Winona for a weekend, so, I went online through a travel site and booked 2 days at the Holiday Inn Express. I arrived there later on Friday and the guy working, he saw my reservation and then said I had to put a card down for incidentals, so, I did. He then told me the cost, but I stated that I already paid on the site and even showed him. He said maybe that was to hold the room, but I showed him the money was taken off my card. When I checked my account later, sure enough, I saw I had been double charged. Also, while checking in, my luggage was there and I had a bag of things I bought for snacks. Later, I realized I must have left that bag by the counter, so, I went to ask. When the guy came out, he was smiling and saying they threw it away, with a chuckle. I asked why they would throw away a bag full of brand new food in it and he just shrugged.
On Saturday, I went out to get that double charge cleared up. The gal working at the time was friendly and understood, but she wasn't able to do it, she said I could return in the morning and the front desk manager could or the hotel manager. So, I went back in the morning and spoke to the front desk manager. I was explaining the situation, but she kept being rude and cutting me off. She said that she'd pass it on to the manager, nothing she could do. I was leaving that day and waiting for a transport, I was going to walk across the street quick, so, I asked if they could watch my luggage for a moment or if they had a place, she just gave this rude-patronizing smile and said, "nope.. sorry". I said, really, don't really accommodate much here. She kept smiling say.. yep, sorry. I had the managers card, so, I messaged all of this.
On Monday, I did receive a call from him, he stated that he saw the issue and refunded me right away and we discussed a few things. He said when they get online reservations, they are supposed to collect from the site, but he has to keep reminding them.
A little while later, he said he saw his email and he called back. He asked about the issues. I told him about the front desk manager, being rude and the luggage. He said he didn't know why she would say that, they do have a room for guest luggage if needed, that really made me upset. He then said that, if I didn't originally book off the 3rd party site, he'd refund me money off my stay, but instead, if I came back sometime, he'd comp me a night.
The thing is, I did have to go through there again the following week, so, I called him and said I'd be there and take him up on the room. He said he had a double queen at something like $220 a night, so, he could give it to me for $130. I said I wasn't going to pay that for a room, I could stay somewhere else much cheaper, I said he told me he'd comp me a night. He said, well, that's like 80% off, I said that didn't matter, I could get a better rate full price somewhere else, like the AmericInn. This guy then said, yeah, but that's the AmericInn and we are the Holiday Inn. I said, yes, which just makes them look better right now. I've been a medical professional for many years, I've done a lot of traveling in my time and I'd have to say, good hotel, but some of the worst staff experience.
When a response is, we're sorry "you feel" we disappointed you, those are more insincere responses. More sincere would be, we're sorry we disappointed you. When things like that happen, it's not a feeling, it flat out terrible service by any standards.
