Copilot said: Historic Fort Snelling is a National Historic Landmark located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers in present-day Minnesota. Built in the early 1820s, the fort played an important role in the expansion of the United States into the Upper Midwest and served as a military post for more than a century. The site stands on Dakota homeland, known as Bdote, a place of deep cultural and spiritual significance to the Dakota people. Throughout its history, Fort Snelling was connected to military operations, trade, immigration, and the experiences of Native peoples, soldiers, enslaved African Americans, and settlers.

This place is AMAZING! We "discovered" it while in Minneapolis for the 2026 Special Olympics Games and visited during our downtime. This is a MUST VISIT for history buffs! The docents were very friendly and knowledgeable. I would HIGHLY recommend visiting!

We had a great time. I used to visit as a kid, and it was fun to show my children some do the same things. The day we visited there was a rifle demonstration, baseball game, and musical performance in addition to the grounds and artifacts. The staff was super helpful and gracious.

My expectations for Fort Snelling were not super high, but it was far better than I could imagine! The MN Historical Society works absolutely brought this place to life. Starting with our 15 minute tour guide Fina, she was fantastic and thoughtful in explaining the history of the fort. The shop keeper, the blacksmith the school house worker, and the Dred Scott worker where absolutely amazing at bringing color and life to each area. I really enjoyed watching the blacksmith work on an actual project with live fire and smithing. The worker in the Dred Scott basement knew their stuff, and the history of that family was fascinating. The museum at the Calvary stables was top notch and had some excellent displays. I appreciate them not erasing the history and embracing the complexity of the area many of us call home. The only thing I think that could improve the place is some of the displays in the fort feel a little tired and maybe could do with some updated plaques and signs. Overall this is definitely worth your time just for the workers alone.

Lots of love to staff member Shamar (sorry if I misspelled). Not only was he well informed of Dred & Harriet Scott's story; but also had knowledge of "Free" Frank McWorter of New Philadelphia, Illinois. We are from central part of Illinois. To learn about the Scotts' in Minneapolis was interesting, not very many people may know. But to converse with someone who has also heard of Mr. McWorter, is truly wondrous. Stay golden Shamar 🤘🥰
