While the staff is nothing short of phenomenal, and the views are stunning, this place is horrid.
I understand this historical significance but it cannot be used as an excuse to avoid upkeep. It is possible for renovation while keeping the integrity intact. The rooms are severely dated.
Not only does the door open directly to both beds in plain view, the window faces an arcade with bright lights that are never turned off, so it looks like 7 am when it's only 3 am since the curtains only cover so much (the light that spills into the room from where the gap between curtain and ceiling is).
The room is split in half by the bathroom. The shower? Good luck. You'll spend the majority of the time just trying to find a steady balance between hot and cold. I'm not even tall and the shower head was near eye level.
The walls and ceiling are full of cracks and scratches, and the wall paper is peeling off.
The lighting is even worse. Your two options are: brighter than the sun or season 7 of Game of Thrones.
All sleeping accommodations should be ashamed of themselves when they claim a full size bed/mattress as a queen or king. Even Goldilocks would say it was too small. They're also wickedly uncomfortable.
The bane of my existence would have to be hotels only including one table in between the beds as if two people aren't sleeping in one bed. Some of us have things we'd like within reach (glasses, medicine, water).
I'm here for a conference and it's chilly. I'm also not a huge water person, so I spend a little more time in the room. However, if you're here with kids, and will be spending the majority of the time outside of the room then you might be fine.
Overall, I would not willingly spend my money to stay here again.
The great and not so great: the great...the staff were incredible. Hotel check-in staff, conference staff, dinner staff, marina breakfast staff, dockside bar staff...all sincerely amazing...professional, smiling, attentive, really quite excellent.
The bad... I think maintenance management may need better room quality checks or better preventative maintenance. The bathroom shower had a lot of mold. It also looked like old mold was covered up by caulk instead of properly addressed. New mold was not cleaned or bleached. Disappointing, kind of gross, and irritated allergies. Water in hotel also had strong sulfur smell.
Maybe give daily cleaning service check boxes that they can turn into maintenance since it may be difficult for management to check hundreds of rooms monthly?
check boxes could include: mold, loose faucets, damaged tile, stains in carpet, HVAC odd noise, stains on walls or ceiling, damaged furniture, loose electrical outlets, etc? (Building 18, room 3209. April 9, 2026.)

Possibly the coolest spot in the world. Definitely the best spot in Minnesota. If you don't have fun here, it's your own fault.
Disappointed they didn't have any chargers for electric cars. They explained there was one a couple miles away in town, but it is not a fast charger. They need to get with the times. There are other resorts that offer this amenity.
