  Disappointed! Average at best. We don't do a ton of traveling, but have had good luck at Holiday Inn Express across the country. We started a waterfall viewing vacation in Munising and stayed at a nice Comfort Inn just outside the boundary of the Picture Rocks National Park. Room was very nice and breakfast exceptional (after horrible dinner at Dogpatch restaurant-stay away!) About $200. Next night found ourselves in Manistique at another Comfort Inn for $200. Can't recommend this hotel high enough. Stay here. See the Big Springs. Eat at Big Boy next door. Great breakfast again. Lake Park right across the road! Now that's a vacation! But I digress..Back to my disappointing experience at my discounted $380 suite at Holiday Inn Express in Houghton last weekend. Supposed to be a suite, (the regular room was only $370!) Room was just typical, sink and tub drains barely functioning. Pet peeve of mine electrical outlets so worn out they won't hold a plug in much less consistently hold your phone charger. My 2nd floor room clearly heard people above walking around, taking shower and whatever that other noise was. Then another pet peeve of mine. The breakfast. (My wife says I'm too critical, but I call 'em, as I see 'em...especially when I'm comparing a $380 room to others at $200.) Breakfast was less than mediocre. The sausage and eggs were made to eat with your fingers without getting them dirty. I love potatoes, but THEY were so dry I couldn't choke them down or even pierce them with a fork. The juice machine was broken. The juice in the refrigerator was in a pitcher so complicated we literally needed 2 people to get it to work. After we just about got shocked trying to fit the oversize bread into the toaster, we found out the toaster was broken after we finally manually stopped it to pull out our blackened bread. But I really wanted toast. So we finangled a couple a pieces and couldn't find any butter. I asked the young man working there about butter. I swear he had never heard the word butter before. (That shocked me because I'm from Wisconsin). He walked away without saying a word. I caught up with him and asked again if he had butter and he mumbled something that sounded like 'I don't think so'. You decide. Am I too critical? Especially comparing to the $200 Comfort Inn hotels? Did I say this was a $380 room?

  I was there for business and this area is obviously more for vacation, family travel, etc. So the options of hotels were limited. Not sure if I would stay here again or try a non brand hotel next time. Just some notes - TV didn't didn't have any streaming apps (not totally unusual but I always consider this a priority in case anyone else does too) - TV quality was poor, something wrong with the picture - I was on the first floor, right by the stairs door, near the work out area/outside exit and it's noisy! The doors from the outside and stairs were constant - the family above me was super loud. I think partly from kids running but also because the walls/ceiling are thin so I don't think it was totally the family's fault - my toilet handle broke during my stay lol - breakfast was pretty normal, depending on the day you get different options (biscuits and gravy were good) - good location, grocery store, Culver's, just 7 minutes from all the water stuff - my room has a microwave and larger fridge (versus a small mini fridge) but no coffee maker - staff were all fine, morning against them and the 3 rating isn't about them TLDR: Definitely a vacation/just a place to stay and sleep and then go do activities during the day kind of situation, don't expect anything super great. But I doubt there are many other way better options around.

  Hotel in its entirety was clean and well kept from what I saw, breakfast on a weekend was adequate and better than some other local hotels I’ve stayed at. Highly recommend local restaurants like: The Ambassador, Suomi, The Fitz in Eagle River, Milly’s in Hancock, and Keweenaw Brewing Co. Downsides: the room door and bathroom door did not shut completely without having to hip-check them. My biggest issue with this property is the complete lack of soundproofing. You can hear everything going on in the hallways through the door, and even have a full fledged conversation with someone from 30ft away while they’re on the other side of said closed door and in the hallway. Kids being loud (not screaming) in the hallways very early in the morning is mostly the fault of the parent(s), but with the complete lack of insulation here, I can’t say it’s not at least in part because of the hotel’s construction. If you are a light sleeper, I would advise trying a different hotel as there seemingly isn’t a solid location in this one where you won’t have better odds at peace. (The lobby is 2 stories and open to the second floor hallway, which doesn’t help.)
