We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at the Legends in Kansas City July 15–16 after attending a concert. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences we have had. The frustrating part was not just the inconveniences during the stay, but how our concerns were handled afterward.l
When we arrived around 1:30 AM, we found out the hotel parking lot was being redone and there was no parking available onsite. We had to park at another business and walk over to the hotel. While inconvenient, we understood that construction happens. What was disappointing was there was no communication ahead of time about the parking situation or where guests were supposed to park.
During check-in, I was asked for my ID and to sign a form. After staying at many hotels, I assumed this was the standard check-in paperwork. I was never told that additional information, such as my license plate number, was needed. If that information was required because of the parking situation, it should have been clearly communicated at check-in. Guests cannot provide information they are never asked for.
After getting back from a late concert and finally getting some sleep, I was woken up around 8 AM by housekeeping in the hallway. There was loud talking and banging on doors. I understand housekeeping has a job to do, but checkout was not until noon, and after arriving so late, it was frustrating.
I put the Do Not Disturb sign on our door because the other person in my room was still sleeping. Shortly after, a hotel employee knocked on our door and woke him up asking which vehicle belonged to us because they were trying to identify the owner of a car. It was frustrating to have our sleep interrupted again, especially after already having such a short night.
At that point, we went to the front desk because we simply wanted to share our disappointment with the stay. We were not trying to cause a problem — we just wanted someone to listen and acknowledge the inconvenience. Unfortunately, the first employee we spoke with immediately became defensive and started arguing about what happened instead of listening. She insisted she did not wake him up and that he was in the shower, which was not accurate. The conversation quickly escalated when all we wanted was someone to understand our frustration.
A second person came out to the front desk during the conversation and asked what she could help with, but did not introduce herself or explain her role. By that point, we had already asked for the General Manager’s contact information, briefly explained what happened, and decided we would follow up with management.
When I called the General Manager, I found out she was the same person who had come out as the second person during the front desk conversation. She explained that the issue happened because we did not complete the parking information with our license plate number. My frustration with that response is that no one asked me for that information or made sure it was completed at check-in. If the hotel needed something from me, especially knowing there was a parking situation happening, it was the hotel’s responsibility to clearly communicate that.
What bothered me the most was not the parking, the construction, or even being woken up. Things happen. What bothered me was the lack of ownership and customer service. A simple “I’m sorry this happened, we understand why you’re frustrated, and we will work on improving our communication” would have gone a long way.
Instead, we felt blamed for something that came down to a lack of communication from the hotel. I contacted IHG afterward and was offered 10,000 points. The hotel offered a 20% refund. At this point, it is less about the money and more about wanting a company to acknowledge when a guest has had a poor experience and make it right.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously because this situation could have been handled very differently with a little understanding and accountability.

This generic reply reflects the same lack of accountability I experienced during my stay.
