After checking out, I was shocked to discover that I had been charged $2,250 for both professional carpet cleaning and replacement of the entire carpet. I did not cause any damage to the room or carpet, and at no point during my stay or at checkout was I informed of any issue with my room. I was never given an opportunity to inspect the alleged damage or discuss the matter before my credit card was charged.
What was even more concerning was the complete lack of professionalism in how this was handled. The charges were processed approximately three hours after I checked out. Given that timeline, I question how the hotel was able to complete an inspection, determine that professional cleaning was warranted, conclude that replacing the entire carpet was necessary, assess the replacement cost, and bill my credit card within such a short period of time. I was never contacted before these charges were posted.
Adding to my concern, the disputed charges did not appear on either of the billing documents I was provided, the checkout folio or the hotel bill I downloaded after my stay. After reviewing both documents and finding no additional charges, I had to search through the hotel’s mobile app before I finally discovered them. Had I not looked further, I would not have known what the charges appearing on my credit card statement were related to.
I made every reasonable effort to resolve the matter directly with the hotel. Because this dispute involved a $2,250 charge, I communicated in writing through email, the hotel app, and certified mail so there would be a clear record of my requests and any response. I also opened a case with IHG. In every communication, I requested an explanation of the alleged damage, photographs, inspection reports, or any documentation supporting the charges. I never received the requested information or any substantive response from hotel management. Being unable to obtain basic documentation while trying to resolve a significant billing dispute reflects a serious lack of professionalism, transparency, and customer service.
Ultimately, I disputed the charges with my credit card issuer, and the dispute was resolved in my favor.
As a guest, I expected honesty, transparency, and professional communication. Instead, I experienced unsupported damage charges, post-stay fees that were not reflected on the billing documents provided to me, and no meaningful response despite multiple good-faith attempts to resolve the matter.
I cannot recommend staying at a property that handles guest concerns in this manner. If a hotel is going to assess thousands of dollars in post-stay damage charges, guests deserve prompt communication, supporting evidence, and the opportunity to understand and discuss the claim before being billed. That did not happen here.
If you choose to stay here, I recommend taking time-stamped photos or a video of your room when you check in and again when you check out, keeping copies of all billing documents, and monitoring your credit card statement carefully after your stay.
