Great location and very friendly and helpful staff. Even though it’s on the north end of the Magnificent Mile, you can easily walk everywhere from the hotel. To Millennium Park is a 20-minute walk. Just around the corner, bus 146 takes you to the planetarium and the aquarium in about half an hour, to the Art Institute in about 10 minutes. Bus 66 takes you to the Navy Pier, and the Hancock Tower is a stone throw away. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet. I will definitely stay there again.

Do not expect too much. I was fine with paying for the extra fees and surprise charges ($123 a night on top of rates) just because of the location. Unfortunately the service at the hotel is where it becomes an issue. I had paid for an late check-out ($50) and somehow the front-desk and housecleaning kept on opening the door and calling the phone provided. All while the "do not disturb" piece was on the door handle. Thus making it a pointless 50 dollars spent for late check-out to sleep in, because of the staff constantly opening the door every 30 minutes. At the end of the stay you walk out to seeing a hotel across the street yearning to have paid the extra money to stay there to avoid the complications and inconveniences that this hotel strives to provide.

The first room we were in smelt of mildew as soon as we walked in, when the AC vent turned on, it was unbearable. I instantly had a headache. When we told management they offered air freshener. We were eventually moved to the 10th floor ( originally on the 8th) it was better but far from luxurious. You can see black mold spots in the vents but no smell and it was a larger room so that part was better. Both floors we saw, the carpet was stained unbelievably bad.( see pics) I would be embarrassed to be in management and have guest here.
Instead of transitions, there is black duct tape keeping the carpet together ( see pics) this is not a need to get a carpet cleaner in here situation, this is it’s time to replace!! The kicker of the the Knickerbocker hotel is the lobby is beautiful and misleading. There is an odor on the 10th floor not mildew like on the 10th but just filth smell. We asked for additional pillows about 9pm and finally got them around 11. Disappointed is an understatement. What a beautiful historic building that has not been maintained.

I genuinely cannot understand how the Millennium Knickerbocker is being marketed at the level it is. I understand that this is an older, historic hotel, and I actually appreciate older properties when they are properly maintained, but there is a huge difference between “historic charm” and a hotel that simply feels like it has not been updated or adequately maintained in decades.
The condition of my room was incredibly disappointing. The carpeting looks extremely old and worn and desperately needs to be replaced. The furniture, counters, and finishes throughout the room are visibly deteriorating, with areas that are literally coming apart. Everything feels tired, dated, and neglected rather than intentionally historic. For the price and supposed caliber of this hotel, I was honestly shocked by the condition.
There are also so many smaller details that add up. The carpets throughout the property look old, the elevators feel dated, the room finishes are worn, and the overall condition simply does not match what you expect when booking a hotel in this location and at this price point.
The location is fantastic, which makes the condition of the property even more frustrating because this hotel has so much potential.
I rarely leave extremely negative hotel reviews, but this stay warranted one. This property needs a serious renovation, not a few cosmetic fixes. Until that happens, I would not stay here again and absolutely would not recommend it at its current price point.
As a business owner and traveller, I’ve stayed at many hotels and get it , but this was one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I’ve had—especially for a property that advertises itself as a 4-star hotel.
We were traveling with our baby and brought food back to the hotel after a long day. We simply wanted to sit in the lobby to eat while tending to our child. Instead of showing even a little compassion or flexibility, we were told we couldn’t eat there because the hotel sells pizza in the lobby.
The issue wasn’t just the policy—it was the way it was handled. The supervisor, Manili, was dismissive, rude, and completely lacking in customer service. Rather than trying to accommodate a family with an infant or offering any reasonable solution, we were treated as though we were inconveniencing the staff.
Hospitality is about making guests feel welcome, especially families traveling with young children. Enforcing a policy without any empathy or common sense falls far short of what I’d expect from a hotel of this caliber.
I won’t be returning, and I would encourage other families to consider whether this is the kind of customer service they want during their stay.I’ve stayed at many hotels, but this was one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I’ve had—especially for a property that advertises itself as a 4-star hotel.
