On June 27, 1844, the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred—killed by a mob that attacked them in Carthage Jail, located in Carthage, Illinois. The original jail has been carefully restored and is about a 30-minute drive from Historic Nauvoo.

    Such a poignant place to visit. The tragedy of the deaths of Hyrum and Joseph Smith. The tragedy of mob violence. The greater tragedy of government neglect and lying to allow the tragedy to happen. The missionaries do a wonderful job describing the events and painting the most positive light possible.
