The room decor was fun, fit the theme, and everything we expect from Disney, as it relates to design. The two pull down beds for our kids were perfect and a smart solution for those that need the sleeping space, but they could be put out of the way for those that do not. Unfortunately, our room was not up to the standards we expect from Disney, due to a horribly strong mildew/mold smell when you enter the room. Even our 3 year old complained. It was very potent and made us feel like we didn’t want to be sleeping in a room where we were breathing in who knows what. We called the front desk right away, and we were told that there were no rooms of our same type available for our check in night. They did offer to move us to a new room the following day, but this would have required us to pack up and check out the next morning, store our luggage, and they’d have our luggage in the new room the next day. I appreciate that they offered a partial solution, but nobody with three kids wants to unpack and repack twice for a three night stay. We suffered through the smell each time we entered the room, and our family of five was congested and stuffy every morning when we woke up. Our congestion would resolve a couple of hours after leaving the room, and nobody had issues at our next hotel, so we are confident it was the room air. Of note, we were on the bottom floor, and guest services acknowledge this is a common complaint. Disney is known for having high standards and prices aren’t cheep, so they need to do better. It’s unacceptable that they continue to rent these stinky rooms that clearly have some sort of a mildew/mold problem. We’ve stayed at the Disneyland Hotel four times, and it has always been one of our best hotel experiences, so it was extremely disappointing to have this stay at the Boardwalk Villas through DVC at Disneyland be one of our least enjoyable hotel experiences. We also question whether these stinky first floor rooms are ever truly given to a DVC member, or are just given to people who rent a member’s points for a stay. What we do know is that we will never consider DVC membership if this is what you get. The room gets a one star, because there is no acceptable reason for Disney to have mildew/mold smelling rooms. Service gets a three star, because although a partial solution was offered, they should have found us any room available that night or compensated us. Location was ideal, so five stars there.
