After having my flight cancelled, I found myself in a difficult situation at 1:30 a.m. trying to find a hotel for my family of four. Thankfully, after getting some help, we found Harrison Hotel. Almost every other hotel I contacted was fully booked, so I was very grateful they had a room available.
We arrived at the hotel around 2:30 to 2:40 a.m. on July 19. My main priority was finding a safe place where my children could shower and get some much needed sleep. I booked and paid for what I understood to be a standard room for one night, from July 19 until checking out on July 20 at 7:30 a.m. The gentleman at the front desk assured me everything was fine, checked us in, and took payment.
To my complete surprise, while we were asleep, the room phone rang around 11:30 p.m. I was asked if I had renewed my reservation. Half asleep and confused, I was then told there was no reservation for me and that I needed to come to the front desk immediately.
My partner and I quickly got dressed, and when we opened the door, security was waiting outside to escort us to the lobby. That was an incredibly uncomfortable experience and made us feel like we had done something wrong, when we had simply checked in as instructed.
When we spoke with the same front desk employee who had checked us in earlier that morning, he told us we did not have a reservation for the night because I had been checked in for July 18 instead of July 19. I explained that I had made the booking with him that morning and clearly stated that I only needed the room for one night, from July 19 to July 20.
He then explained that the hotel’s policy considers the day to run until 3:00 a.m., meaning I would have to pay for both July 18 and July 19, even though my family only occupied the room from the early morning of July 19 until the morning of July 20. This policy was never explained to me during check in, and I was led to believe I had booked exactly what I requested.
My experience started off very positively, and I was thankful the hotel had availability when we desperately needed it. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled completely changed my impression. Being awakened late at night, escorted to the lobby by security, and then told I needed to pay for an additional night because of a policy that was never explained was both embarrassing and frustrating.
I left very disappointed. While I was initially grateful to have found this hotel, this experience has made me think twice about staying here again or recommending it to others. I hope management reviews how late night check ins are explained to guests so that no other family has to go through what we experienced.
