The Viceroy Washington DC has an excellent location in a quiet neighborhood and is within walking distance of many major attractions. The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, check-in was easy, and the room was clean with a spacious bathroom.
Unfortunately, the basics fell short. During one of the hottest weekends of the year, the air conditioning barely worked, leaving the room hot and humid throughout our stay. The Wi-Fi was unreliable, water pressure in the shower was weak, and housekeeping didn't arrive until around 5 PM, right when guests are typically getting ready for the evening.
For the price, I expected better execution of the fundamentals. While the staff and location were great, I travel to DC several times a year and will be choosing a different hotel on my next visit.

Like many visitors over the summer holiday, we paid peak pricing—approximately $500 per night. At that rate, I expected a comfortable and well-maintained stay.
Unfortunately, the problems started immediately. Upon check-in, one of the air conditioning units in our room was not working. We asked for it to be repaired or for a room change, but the hotel was fully booked, so we stayed and hoped the issue would be resolved.
The following day, the air conditioning system failed throughout the building. We returned late from dinner to find our room at 86°F (30°C). We were traveling with our cat, and the hotel was fully aware that we had a pet. No one contacted us to warn us about the failure or to check on the situation.
To the hotel’s credit, the manager agreed to refund the upcoming night. However, we then had to find another hotel immediately during a holiday weekend, with almost no availability and significantly higher rates for the remaining three nights of our trip. The disruption and additional expense substantially affected our vacation.
What makes this particularly disappointing is that we genuinely liked our Suite room when we first arrived and enjoyed the neighborhood. However, once you look beyond the location, the property feels dated and closer to a three-star hotel than a luxury one.
There were also several smaller disappointments. The hotel advertised oysters during happy hour over the July 4th weekend, but they were unavailable. The outdoor breakfast area was overwhelmed by mosquitoes—I received six bites in about 20 minutes despite constantly trying to keep them away.
I paid a rate with breakfast just to discover that it's a “breakfast credit” 21$ per person and a classic breakfast for two (like 2 eggs and sausage) plus two coffees is 66$ lol
Don't fall into this trap.
Overall, this experience did not meet the standards I expect from the Viceroy brand. Between the maintenance issues, the lack of communication during a major building failure, and the overall condition of the property, I cannot recommend paying premium rates here. In my opinion, this hotel represents reasonable value only at around $250 per night—not at double that price.

Pessimo staff!

Horrible is the word that I would use to describe a stay in this hotel. I booked this hotel through the Hotel Collection for American Express Platinum. When I checked into the hotel, I was told by the front desk that my room was “upgraded” in accordance with their policy with American Express. This upgraded room was a handicap-accessible 2 bed queen room on the second floor. We then tried to go to the pool but someone had taped signs on the wall that said that it was reserved for a private party. A woman had set up a card table to the entrance to the pool and was acting like a bouncer for any guests who tried to go to the pool. I walked down to the front desk and was told that it was reserved for a private party, but offered no explanation why this was not told to potential guests when booking the hotel. We left to get dinner, but when we came back, a hotel employee was in the front of the building smoking marijuana in his Viceroy polo shirt. The inside of the hotel hallways smelled like marijuana as well. The website for the hotel advertises it as “family friendly”, which is clearly not the case. I contacted American Express this morning because of how awful this experience has been. I ordered breakfast this morning and the cost was over $100 for three entrees. They did not bring ice to our room and there was no where for us to get ice ourselves. I tried to call room service from the hotel room but the phone would not dial that extension. I had to call the front desk to connect me. Once I reached room service, a woman came on the line and said: “I heard you have some questions about the charges on your breakfast receipt” in an aggressive tone. This is not even why I was calling— I wanted some ice, but yes, the receipt including two separate charges for the same drinks. The hotel rooms themselves are subpar. The shower door was broken in our “upgraded” 2 queen room. The bathroom door was not properly attached to its hinges and will not open all the way and is scraping across the floor. Do not book this hotel. The other reviews are likely not genuine.

Arrived at the hotel at 13:30, 1.5 hours before the stated checking time. We were more than happy too wait until 15:00.
We got told great news your room is ready. However if you want to get to your room early it’s a $50.00 charge. Again fair enough.
So we declined paying the $50.00 and were happy to wait until 15:00.
We sat in close proximity to the reception desk, whilst sat waiting at least two other guests / groups were allowed to check in and they waved the $50.00 fee.
I find that absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional. Either follow the rules for every customer or don’t.
I think the reception staff over heard me talking to my travel partner of how unsatisfied I was with what was going on.
Then lo and behold the reception staff, sir we are going to wave the fee you may check in now.
Not a great start to our short trip to DC.
The guest amenity fee is ridiculous and money grabbing. $40.48 per day. I asked what this was for and I was told it was for the WiFi, Gym, Swimming pool, water machines & social areas.
Surely the cost of these such things are covered in the room fee?
Nice enough hotel however these two things put me off massively and would not stay here again.
