After a very long day of driving from Joshua Tree National Park with stops along Route 66, arriving at Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Ventura Harbor felt like finally exhaling.
Our room had a gorgeous view of the harbor, which immediately made the long drive worth it. The room itself was simple but very comfortable, exactly what you want from a Holiday Inn Express. Two comfortable queen beds, a spacious clean bathroom, and everything we needed for a restful night. Nothing flashy, just solid comfort done well.
The location was excellent. We were able to walk just a few minutes over to the harbor area and grab takeout from one of the nearby restaurants, which made the evening easy and relaxing after spending most of the day in the car. The harbor itself is really pleasant to walk around, especially at sunset.
The staff overall was fine, professional enough but not especially memorable. However, one member of the housekeeping team truly stood out. Unfortunately, I do not remember her name, but she was incredibly kind and warm, and those small moments of genuine friendliness really do make a difference when you are tired from traveling.
One thing we especially appreciated was the laundry facility. Since we are doing a six-week road trip, having a clean, well-maintained laundry room was almost weirdly exciting. The machines were easy to use, accepted credit cards, and everything was very clean and convenient. Road trip people will understand the deep emotional comfort of clean socks halfway through a long journey.
The only real downside for us was the balcony lighting. There is an automatic light outside that turns on at night, and guests apparently have no control over it. Unfortunately, it stayed on all evening and completely changed the atmosphere of the harbor view at night. Instead of enjoying the dark peaceful marina lights, we felt like we were sitting under a parking lot spotlight auditioning for a security camera. We also had to close the blackout curtains, which was disappointing because normally we love sleeping with the curtains open and enjoying the nighttime view.
Also, while our room and the lobby were clean and well maintained, some of the common areas of the hotel could definitely use more attention. The hallways and elevators, in particular, did not feel quite up to the same standard as the room itself. Nothing terrible, but enough to notice.
Overall, though, this hotel was comfortable, convenient, and perfectly located for enjoying Ventura Harbor. It gave us exactly what we needed after a long day on the road: a quiet place to rest, reset, and watch the harbor lights at night, or at least the ones not competing with the balcony floodlight.
Great spot! Plenty of outdoor parking, easy getting in and out with luggage, fairly nice rooms. Lovely view of the harbor! Everyone at the front desk is friendly and helpful. Microwave and mini-fridge in the room too. One downside, the lower level rooms have a "lower-level" living room within them, which includes stairs that have ALWAYS-ON LIGHTS. It's clearly a legal/safety thing, but I strongly recommend eye-masks if you're staying here! Bathroom is fine, solid water pressure.
Biggest plus was the free breakfast. It's your usual continental fair, but the staff does a great job keeping it clean and well-stocked!
My wife and I will always stay here whenever we visit Ventura Harbor, definitely the place where you get the most bang for your buck! Dog-friendly & plenty of grass in the parking lot.
