I visited for a spa afternoon. I did not stay at the hotel. There are many good things about this place especially the beautiful grounds and the excellent friendly service. The spa is located off the pool area and so one should stop at the front desk for directions and a key to the pool. I went on a Saturday afternoon on a beautiful day and so the pool itself was full of people including lots of kids. Not too surprising given it is a hotel. But not a peaceful place to relax. The spa itself has a back garden with a whirlpool. I spent time there prior to my treatment. At first I was the only one there, and it was very peaceful and relaxing, that is until I realized a nearby door was banging open and closed in the wind. I could not find where it was. Then a wedding started on the other side of the fence. This was actually quite pleasant to listen to the music and the sounds of the ceremony.
I moved to the indoor lounge to wait for my treatment. This is a small room and I was quickly joined by four other people making it a little crowded. Two people had to sit on stools, which I don’t think is super relaxing. Also, the barn door opened to the Spa entry area. Another woman there commented that she felt like she was at the dentist office waiting to be called on.
I was there for a massage and the actual treatment was very good.
After treatment I returned to the women’s locker room. This is also a small space and with about six of us in there it was a little tight. There is one separate shower room, and then another shower in the main part of locker room which offers little privacy. The room itself is clean and very attractive, but gets a little crowded with more than a couple of people.
Overall, this is an attractive place with very good service. But the small size of the spaces is less than ideal for relaxation when multiple people are using it at the same time.

Arrival & Staff
The arrival tone was set beautifully. The welcome desk provided a genuine walkthrough of the property with map in hand and greeted us with a generous pour. Baggage staff were attentive and thorough, and the text communication system was responsive throughout the stay — a small operational detail that makes a big difference.
The Room
The design here is impressive in a purposeful, functional way — not just photogenic. Wherever you anticipated needing a hook, an outlet, or a surface, one was there. Bathroom drawers offered great storage, heated floors were a lovely touch, and the overall aesthetic was warm and considered. Minor note: closet space for longer items was a bit limited, but a small concession in an otherwise well-appointed room. A few yummy complimentary snacks are also provided - small gesture that is always so nice and welcoming. Countless touches, love the dyson dryers to cut down on hair dry time is always appreciated.
Relaxing: Robes, Slippers & Spa
The robes were exceptional quality and the slippers were actual slippers — not the cardboard-thin found almost everywhere else. Love thoughtful touches even in the small things. Spa steam room access is included for hotel guests without a scheduled appointment, which is always appreciated. The outdoor hot tub in the room delivered real hot water, fast — a refreshing contrast to other properties where you're waiting ages for it to fill up.
One Note on the Pool
The pool area is on the smaller side, and lounge chair saving was a noticeable issue. One guest was saving 1/3rd of the loungers empty for hours during peak sun, just to have the other guests arrive for only 15minutes before heading off to dinner. A bit more staff presence to manage availability would go a long way.
Bottom Line
MacArthur Place is full of thoughtful execution and staff who genuinely care. Wonderful design, rooms, outdoor lounge space, and a short walk from downtown shops. A strong recommend for any Sonoma getaway — hope to return soon.

The MacArthur place is a fabulous boutique hotel a short walk from the square in downtown Sonoma. The rooms are beautiful and the fireplace under the TV was a perfect end to a day of wine tasting. There are tons of details and features in the rooms including heated floors in the bathroom.
There is a nice restaurant on property called Layla and a coffee shop called the Porch. I want to specifically call out Ed who works at the Porch. After having to unexpectedly put down our dog days before arrival he was the most compassionate person. He went out of his way to check up and just show so much empathy and support. He is truly the epitome of 5 stars and we cant say Thank you enough to the whole staff, but Ed in particular!

Let me think, memorable, remarkable, delightful. From the moment we got there, throughout the stay and upon leaving, the staff and establishment perpetuated a calming stress-free environment. The Bar, Café and Layla's, are amazing places on grounds to grab a bite or indulge in your senses. Once there, I had no reason to leave. To resort amenities, activites and lounging I was completely contempt and encouraged to enjoy the entireties of the resort.

Accommodations were tip top. Loved the Juniper. The bed was not exceptionally comfortable but the shower water flow was so good. The 82 degree pool was awesome. My boyfriend’s massage was exceptional but not quite as good as osmosis.
The serious let down was dining at the Layla restaurant which we even gave a second chance after the first night’s let down. Burger… thumbs down, undercooked bad flavor. Beet salad, good. 2nd night… apple salad, raviolis and petroli soul. Just not good. Too much pepper on the soul and in a white flavorless sauce. Looked like a raw uncooked fillet. All white. Crappy presentation and did not taste better than it looked. Salad had a cilantro twang without any mention of this flavor profile in description. It wasn’t enjoyable. The 5 ravioli were good and nice sized but on top there was 2x bounty of chewy rubber like mushrooms and gramma stewed tomatoes galore.
Lastly, more disappointment at Layla… no couth waiter. A bit like the petroli and not even good at pretentious - in his dreams.would NEVER dine here unless staying here. Seriously sad excuse for a classy restaurant without MacArthurs Place name.
Frequently Asked Questions About MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa
How far are you from the center of town? Can we walk there?
We are a hop, skip and a jump from the center of town, known as Sonoma Plaza, or “The Square.” In more concrete terms, we are a ten minute walk, a 5 minute bicycle ride (less if you use one of our electric bikes!) and a 3 minute drive. Our property sits at the edge of a beautiful residential neighborhood with Victorian, mid-century, craftsman and modern homes and stately trees, so the walk or bike ride to the center of town is peaceful, beautiful and safe.
Are there wineries close to you?
Sonoma Plaza, a ten minute walk from MacArthur Place, is home to more than 30 tasting rooms, most of which are open to the public and welcome walk-ins. And within a short 8-12 minute drive, you can access over two dozen additional wineries amidst the vineyards and foothills. We are also a 20-minute drive from Napa, with its own impressive array of wineries.
Do you offer an airport transfer service, or a shuttle to Sonoma Square?
We do not offer a standard, regularly-scheduled transport service. We work with each guest personally to customize transportation to their preferences. Whether you fancy a shuttle bus, town car, rideshare, limousine, refurbished vintage Land Rover…or an electric bicycle, our concierge team would be happy to help you plan the perfect mode of transport for your journey.
Is it easy to get Uber and Lyft?
Uber and Lyft are available in Sonoma, although wait times can range dramatically depending on the time of year, day of the week or time of day. Summer weekends, holidays and big event nights (such as the Tuesday Night Farmers Market in May thru October), for instance, usually require a significant wait. If you are planning a day of wine tasting at various vineyards, we recommend hiring a driver or booking a tour for a more seamless experience. For airport transportation, we recommend allowing extra time in case wait times are lengthy. Alternatively, we would be happy to arrange a driver or shuttle service for you.
Do you have a restaurant on property?
Our newly-reimagined property has three culinary outlets, Layla, The Bar at MacArthur, & The Porch. Layla is a contemporary and elevated Mediterranean restaurant serving breakfast & lunch daily and dinner Wednesday – Sunday. The Bar at MacArthur is a warm and inviting bar-lounge that serves a curated selection of cocktails, beers and an easy all-day menu, and The Porch is a communal coffee shop, stock house, and marketplace.
Are there any vegetarian or vegan options on the menu?
Layla offers an array of fresh and seasonal dishes featuring fresh and local produce in Sonoma. We have several vegetarian and vegan options. Many dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan upon request.
Is there a corkage fee at Layla?
Yes, the corkage fee is $35 per bottle and is waived with the purchase of 1 bottle (750ml or magnum) on the list.
Do you offer in-room dining? What are the hours?
Yes, we have a seasonal in-room dining menu featuring highlights from the Layla and Bar menus. In-room dining is offered from 7:30am until 9pm. Breakfast is served 7:30-10:30am, after which guests can order from our All Day menu. The menu is available on our website, or you can call the front desk for assistance.
Can you recommend any other great places to eat and drink in the area?

Is The Spa at MacArthur open only to hotel guests?
The Spa at MacArthur is open to day guests as well as overnight hotel guests. We recommend making advance reservations for Spa treatments, as our facilities are limited and tend to book out especially in peak summer months. To book a spa appointment, please call 707-933-3193.
Do you offer any fitness classes or passes?
Each Saturday and Sunday morning from 9-10am we offer an invigorating yoga session led by one of our talented local instructors – Jes Williams & Andrea Bogart. This all-levels vinyasa class weaves together a mindful flow linking breath to challenging poses, with an emphasis on alignment, strength, balance and just letting go. This yoga class is held indoors in the colder months in one of our cozy Coach House event salons or on our Burris House lawn during the late Spring through early Fall. This class is complimentary for hotel guests, and a mat will be provided. The class is $10 for Sonoma locals.
