Bargain-motel experience with luxury pricing
From the moment we entered, our room was hot and stuffy. It took two separate service calls to get anyone to take the issue seriously. Both times, maintenance insisted the HVAC was blowing cool air. It wasn't until I asked the technician to actually inspect the vent that we discovered an air filter so caked in dust it was completely choked off. Rather than fixing the system or moving us to a functioning room, the technician simply ripped the filthy filter out entirely and handed us a weak tower fan that barely made a dent in the heat.
The rest of the stay only highlighted a complete lack of basic upkeep and administrative competence:
Plumbing Failures: The shower was dangerously hot. The moment you turned on the cold water to adjust the temperature, the water pressure dropped to a useless trickle.
Damaged Fixtures: The towel fixtures were noticeably rusting, leaving unsightly bronze stains on the clean white towels.
Billing Incompetence: On check-in, I explicitly instructed the front desk to bill the entire stay to a specific card different from my booking and to remove the original card. On checkout, they charged two separate cards anyway, forcing me to unwind their error in person.
Unauthorized Fees: To make matters worse, they tacked on a random $25 "laundry bag" charge after we checked out - a fee that never appeared on our final receipt. Resolving this bogus charge required endless back-and-forth with management.
When you pay premium rates for a complete breakdown in basic hospitality, you expect management to step up with a discount or partial refund to make things right. Instead, when we brought all of this to the front desk, we were met with a dismissive, "We'll make sure to hit the mark next time."
Expecting a paying guest to swallow a ruined stay so the hotel can simply "try harder next time" is insultingly tone-deaf. There will not be a next time. Save your money and book anywhere else.

We had 3 rooms which overall were great. Though one of the room 353 had hvac issue. The room was too cold and temperate control wasn’t working. When we mentioned this in the afternoon someone to fix came at 11:30 Pm and told our rooms hvac was causing issue in other room. No fix in next two days and when they fixed it made the room too hot.
There also was construction across all the rooms which were weren’t informed about. Hotel says it’s beyond their control but in every other case I have seen hotel informing before hand.
Pool facility and breakfast etc were great.

Really lovely place to stay. The staff are the sweetest people. I’ve never felt more taken care of. Thank you for making my stay easier. Steven was especially fabulous and took really good care of us.

I’ve been coming to the Hotel Californian for years, and it’s incredibly disappointing to see how much the atmosphere has changed under the new management. What was once a place that felt welcoming, connected to the Santa Barbara community, and genuinely enjoyable is now run by a management team that feels cold, corporate, dishonest and ill intentioned. More than that, they have made the hotel feel disconnected from the local community who helped make it special in the first place. It’s difficult to recognize it as the same hotel I used to recommend so enthusiastically.
Because of these changes, I won’t be returning, and I can no longer recommend this hotel to friends, family, or anyone looking for an authentic Santa Barbara experience. I recommend taking your money and going elsewhere.
