We’ve stayed at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins quite a few times, and it’s definitely a unique San Francisco hotel. There’s so much history behind the property, including Top of the Mark on the rooftop, and staying here feels very different from staying at a newer, more modern hotel.
The hotel sits at the top of beautiful Nob Hill and is in a great central location for getting around to Chinatown, Union Square, downtown, SOMA, and other parts of the city. The building itself has so much character and history. The decor is definitely on the older, more traditional side, with lots of dark wood and classic details, but it’s still beautifully done. The rooms also show their age a bit, which I think is to be expected with a historic property.
Service has always been fine during our stays, and the breakfast options are really good. Overall, I’d recommend staying here if you appreciate historic hotels and want something with more character and a sense of old San Francisco rather than a sleek, modern hotel.

There’s not even tea/coffee or a safe in the room. I don’t see how this hotel is allowed to brand itself as an InterContinental.
They said there’s tea/coffee downstairs from 5:00 am until 11:00 or something. Even an Avid or Holiday Inn Express is better.
Let’s not ignore the sickening “amenity fee”. We found out later that it was supposed to include a $10 daily dining credit but we were never informed of this during check-in. And the Wi-Fi was quite poor for this standard of hotel. Feel very much misled. No surprise that they conveniently billed us a 'mandatory fee' not included in the room rate/points but neglected to mention what we were paying for... as the front desk was anything but friendly during check-in
I would suggest saying elsewhere. Stop supporting this amenity fee nonsense. Pricing is less transparent by the day.

Oddly, I didn’t take photos, but you’ll have to trust me on this. I thought the hotel was really nice, it feels kind of old school and it’s nothing over the top fancy, but the staff were so nice and every single person I spoke to was concerned about our stay and if we were enjoying ourselves. The location couldn’t be better, but, I would consider a pro tip to tell you to buy the unlimited transportation pass that includes the cable car. You can walk downhill and see all the sites and then take the Street cable car to the top of the hill. It’s right at the top of the hill and then the cable car will basically drop you out front. Otherwise, the hills can be ugly. The views are great and I think the place is well worth the cost.

The hotel is located on top of a hill, and the view of San Francisco from our room was absolutely beautiful. The location was also very convenient, with many attractions and popular areas nearby. However, the surrounding hills are quite steep, so walking can be tiring—but then again, that is San Francisco!
The grand lobby has beautiful historic charm, but the guest room and facilities felt noticeably dated. There was also quite a bit of dust in the room, and we had to wipe down some areas ourselves before settling in. On the positive side, the bedding was extremely comfortable, and we slept very well.
We also had an issue one night when a member of our group could not enter the room. None of us inside had locked the door, but the staff repeatedly suggested that we had caused the problem by locking it. Even after we explained that we had not done so, their attitude made us feel as though we were being blamed, which was disappointing.
The cleanliness, aging facilities, and handling of the door issue could certainly be improved. Still, the excellent location, incredible city view, and very comfortable bedding made the overall stay enjoyable. A good hotel, but not quite a five-star experience for us.

Pretty run down but the beds are legit. I would have given this place a 2 star if it weren't for the amazing beds.
Honestly, this hotel isn't great for the Intercontinental brand. Not sure why it's in the network.
The owner's response states that the team takes the condition of the property seriously meanwhile the elevator button in the lobby is broken and barely hanging on. Not sure how management can say they take something seriously when something so instrumental and is one of the first impressions a person gets of the place is broken. No pride in the property whatsoever. This isn't some hidden back corner detail, it's the main elevator bank where the button is barely hanging on. It's embarassing.
Also, if you're a diamond member, they don't really respect it here. I asked for late checkout and was told that I can have it for a fee. Diamond members are meant to get late checkout without a fee, that's one of the reasons that I stay at IHG hotels.
At the end of the day, this hotel is not worth staying at. I'll try the other Intercontinental in town to see if it's any better. This location desperately needs new management that actually cares.
