One of the best museum / history experiences I've seen. They take you through a pretty entertaining story form presentation. The history of some of the earliest people in this area is fun and quick but also informative. I recommend for kids (though I didn't have any with me when I visited - it was just me). Family friendly or solo traveler stop recommended but skip the park (until at least 2028) it's too much under construction to be fun. Go here first and then to old town for the afternoon/evening. The museum is always free. Only worry about reservations (still free) if you have a group more than 10 people.

Free activities at this venue with docents dressed in periodic clothing. Interactive tour where the docents handed out "spoons" to play music, involved volunteers to put on battalion clothes and gear, and had gold panning to finish. Docents were knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging, without pressure or preaching.

This was wonderful, and exceeded our expectations. The sisters showing us around were energetic and enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. History came alive in a fascinating story that we would not likely ever hear about, if not for this wonderful site! Highly recommended!

This was fun! I don't know what I was expecting but this definitely exceeded all expectations. I thought it was a museum but this was something else. It is a historical presentation about this group and it was cool and entertaining to experience. They didn't seem to have scheduled tours but the just started one right up when we walked in. They made history come alive! 10/10 would recommend. I think it would be great for families. Also, it is completely free

Unbelievable story! I dare say most of the residents of San Diego, and probably California in general have no idea who created the first community in San Diego. It wasn't the Fryers, though they arrived first. It was a Battalion of the United States Army. Many of their wives and children.
If you have never been to this place, you're missing out on a real treat Not only does it have fantastic interactive displays, supported by live actors and thanks to it's supporting sponsoring institution. The story telling is very professional and fascinating, while staying historically correct.
